Bain & Company I’m currently prepping for Bain & Company and McKinsey & Company interviews scheduled in the next 2 months. For those that interviewed with both, how would you suggest I tailor my preparation for each one? I understand McKinsey is interviewer led while Bain is the opposite. But other than that, is there anything else I should work on separately for each one?

I joined at 39 and will be partner next year
That's interesting. It's exactly the move I'm doing right now (joining McK as EM at 40). Do you think being aligned to industry helps more than to practice?
I joined in the post MBA role a few months before my 35th birthday. I was ex-military and top MBA, which is a not uncommon among older joiners. Age wasn’t an issue per se although I was 5+ years older than my peers. Biggest challenge was being at a totally different place in life (married with little kids vs. my single or newly married peers). Which meant at times it was harder to live and breathe the job 24/7 like some other people.
I can see doing this if it greatly increases your comp and accelerates or changes your career path. I would not do it for a small bump or just to have the name on my resume if you like where you are and have a good path to grow there. To be more blunt in your shoes I’d leave a Big 4 or ACN for this opportunity but not a firm like OW or Kearney.
Never too old to take a job thats $175k+ in base and $200k+ in total comp
Definitely on the higher end of age, but I have colleagues who are ~40+ and consultants and doing great!!
Mentor
Joined as consultant older than that. Not an issue. Some pros, some cons. Exit opps, however, are great - people seem to appreciate the additional life experience + MBB
More background - Late boomer in career - made two career changes. Also hard to see most friends my age or younger making directors / managers already :/
Go for it now if you wanna try.
I joined as C at age 32-33, definitely on the older end so can’t be as energetic as them youngsters. Also if you can put your ego aside and be open to get managed/trained by younger team leads, it would be the key to doing the work.
If you want to do it, you should - I don’t think age should hinder your goals and dreams but I will say it becomes much harder esp as an Associate/Consultant in late 30s if you’re trying to or planning on having a family, you don’t have the autonomy of your schedule unlike being an AP/Principal - workload is similar but don’t have flexibility
What is your end goal? Can you do something else and be a direct to hire partner?
Why not go do something that’s more focused on your end goals? How does MBB get you there? Sounds like you should be targeting nonprofits more than anything else.
Are you joining as an EM or Associate?
What firm are you at now? Under normal circumstances, you would be AP type level. That means you should be 2-3 years away from partner.
To me, the trade of is:
1) If you are 2-3 years away from partner at current firm, can you make it and what is then the probability to switch 2-3 years AFTER making partner (McK usually will not give a first year partner in another firm a direct partner role)
2) Is it worth it for you to “restart” your Associate clock, basically restarting as a post MBA Associate and potentially make Partner in 7-8 years (and what is the probability)
Side bar, what is your performance and progression at current firm? If it’s not top 10-25 percent, MBB would be tough to get in, as they look for top performers
Nope. I’m interviewing for a consultant role at 33 years of age and I have a 3 month old newborn.
