I mean there's no set number of years. That would be ridiculous. It does get more difficult to pivot out of your specialty as you stay longer though.
In audit and want to be a controller? 5 years of PA would be great. Want to go into corporate finance? Probably should've left 2-3 years before.
You just get more specialized and therefore will have fewer options without taking a demotion. If you’re a senior manager specializing in state and local tax for insurance companies, you’re going to have a hard time finding a role on the same level in industry where your experience would be relevant; there just aren’t that many out there.
No, SMs leave all the time for VP,SVP, Controller, CFO roles all the time, depending on org size. It just takes a bit longer and the search is more proactive. Reality is it’s easy for recruiters to find a million senior finance/accounting analyst roles so that’s often the tale that gets told
No, but there are a ton of lower level roles in industry so it’s easier to find a job when there’s such a big pool of jobs. But, as a manager and SM, you are more qualified for higher level jobs. There just aren’t quite as many of those (but they’re better jobs and they pay more).
