Is it unreasonable to tell my project leadership that I am comfortable putting in 12 hour days in perpetuity provided I can spend at least 6 hours working at home?

There is absolutely no need to work a 12 hour day in any case.

likeuplifting

I would no propose the hours, I would simply ask for flexibility of onsite vs wfh and commit to keeping things on track and be available as needed

like

I think it is reasonable but what would be even more is don't commit to hours, commit to quality deliverables

like

No!!!! Make your needs for flexibility known.

You guys saying “no project” needs 12 hours a day are smoking crack

like

Sounds reasonable to me. It’s the 21st Century, we have cell phones, email, WebEx, and tons of ways to interact. Make sure to stress you will be communicative to the team and will still handle the same workload

like

Thanks for the insight folks. I have been producing quality deliverables for 2 years on this team. Was thinking of proposing 7-3 at office, then online 6-10 to wrap things up as needed.

like

I guess that is reasonable MD1. I am worried if I don’t delineate specifics of my schedule there will be some creep into the work life balance I am striving for.

like

MD1 is spot on, I would say 3pm might be a sticking point because even though you're on site for 8, a lot of managers/directors will cite "optics" problems if you leave before 5 and as BS as that is they aren't wrong.

Still it depends on who you are working under and for.

like

If you’ve been doing 12 hours for 2+ years on the same team/project that is a problem. As for your request, I’d think you’d have better luck picking a day or two per week and WFH normal business hours. Depends on your role and needs of team/client, but beyond optics, if you start shifting your available hours you lose 2 hrs of ability to work with others. If someone else then wants to come in at 10am and stay later while a third person wants a 3 hour mid day break it becomes a slippery slope of catering to everyone’s preferred working shifts versus following normal schedules

like

I would ask for the flexibility to work from home on days when there isn’t much client facing stuff going on, maybe 2-3 days a week. Then request to have days on site end at 5pm for you. You can say you can pick up things at night IF NEEDED but I would not promise 12 hours a day. If you’ve been with this team for a while I would DEFINITELY ask for flex and they have no reason not to give it to you!!!

like

Getting to work at home as a local resource is a hard sell. I don't think saying you'll work 12 hours is too compelling since in theory you'll work 8 on site and 4 at home in that scenario but in reality you are probably working on site all day.

You should get a better reason for why you want to work from home. Maybe consider asking for explicit permission to peace out at 5 and finish up the day at home? That seems like a much more realistic ask.

12 hour day? Come on. No project ever needs that.

Thanks MD1, that approach is rational and I think should satisfy both parties.

And they don't allow you, quit and come work for Huron

7-3 isn’t really reasonable for many of our clients. On-site is for two reasons - one to be with clients and two to be teams. Many times 7-9 isn’t meeting time for either of those, so I’m not sure that totally makes sense.

If you get it to work tho, good for you!

I just finished a big jury trial with a senior partner (SP). There were co-parties w/separate counsel. SP mentally checked out, to the point that co-counsel was asking what SP was doing/if SP was okay. I ended up handling most everything. SP did a few parts but went rogue and did things that were offensive/risky/bad for client. It became clear that SP is not performing like SP used to and may be a liability. Do I tell someone at my firm? Don’t want to offend SP or cause drama, but I’m concerned.

Burned out in current role. 10-plus years post-MBA experience in Corp Fin role unable to move up to Director due to lack of "scope" - limited to no opps. Currently, work 40-50 hours week (minimal to no weekends) and earn ~250 TC. Work day is "intense" - many quick turnaround projects from task to task.

Is it worth shopping around? Can I get promo to Director level at another Tech company, earn more and still maintain same level of hours (limited weekend work)? Less intense days possible?

One of the reasons I want to transition from industry to consulting (tier 1) is that I get frustrated when I have to collaborate with mediocre people. My assumption is that Tier 1 consulting firms hire really sharp people and if I can get in, I’ll be collaborating with folks on top of their game (not expecting much from clients). I’m aware there are personal aspects I need to work on like my mindset, patience etc etc, but I just get so frustrated with blatant stupidity.
