I did this! Not to go into big tech but to get a title bump (fishbowl isn’t letting my update my title so this is an old one). Made more in 5 months than I would have a whole year at my last full time role. Then my contract ended and I’m going on 3 months no work and aggressively applying places. So just keep that in mind.
Will you be hired by that agency VS the company itself? It is a bit different.
I would consider all case scenarios, I left agency to join a tech company, and it’s not where I see myself long-term. But also seems like you need to get out of that agency asap, can try doing contract and keep actively looking for a better role.
It’s as corporate as it gets, very different way of working too; if you can be unbothered and okay with being a cog in a machine, it could be super safe, especially for a creative, but I’m trying to get out asap.
I did this and then got hired full time. Was worth it. I was in a lucky situation where headcount increased but also I worked really hard to prove myself. It’s a gamble though, so you have to understand that you might have to keep interviewing while there to have an income if they can’t extend or hire you FT. The benefit is that you can try it out and if you don’t like it you can leave at the end of your contract (which is a little more frowned upon if you’re FT)
Full time stability is a myth.
In my mind if you have somewhere to go, rather it be contract or not, it’s always worth it to leave a toxic situation, especially if it makes you physically ill.
If they are unstable, you really don’t know how long you’ll be there anyway and might want to consider jumping ship while there’s an opportunity on the table.
Be careful equating “stability” with full time. I worked at an agency and 4 months into it, they laid off my entire team. You can’t tell me they didn’t know that was being considered before i was hired. Those type of decisions aren’t made overnight.
If you take the contract role, I suggest you use the time at the big tech, to both prove your worth AND continue to look.
I’ve been contracting for 5 years and now that I’ve figured out insurance, I love it and not sure I’ll ever go back to full time, unless they have a pension which is almost unheard of these days. Just be prepared for those in between times. $$$
Also, not sure if it matters, but the contract role is through a recruitment agency.
Are you getting a big pay bump?
the contract rate is a lil low but if it were to be converted to full time i’d be able to renegotiate for much more… emphasis on IF
It’s always a gamble. You just have to mentally and emotionally prepare yourself in any case your contract role is up and there’s no extension, or full time offer on the table. And with the current market, you can only answer for yourself of how much risk you’re able to take.
Idk. Big tech = boring work that won’t be in your book.
Can you do both jobs for a little bit? I got a fl gig with a company that I couldnt refuse and ended up doing that and my ft job for about 3 months. It gave me more security and money to finally leave.
that’s really awesome! Glad it worked out that way. I definitely would try if they were both remote ugh RTO
If you are single and have no kids and have savings. Do whatever the hell you want.
