Yes I made a similar switch back in 2017 when I was working at Infosys. I have worked in SAP SD , PI and ABAP.
Just one thing I wanted to state which not many would tell you is that , never ever become a data scientist rather aspire to become a ML/DL/NLP engineer. The latter are more like software engineers with great programming and ML skills. No matter how cutting edge the model becomes there is always going to be the scope for optimisation, a traditonal data scientist can't do it until they have good grip over ds and algo along with maths and stats. Also data scientists don't often get involved in deployment, scaling ,sharding etc. Hence, as stated by the person above they may get obsolete until they get a very good grip over some domain like finance , banking etc or they learn core programming skills like ds algo.
Also , alot of youtube ai specialists these days spread the lie that we don't need dsa and all.
If you really want to excel in AI and work for a great company you must need dsa. DSA not only helps in cracking interviews but also helps in tweaking existing ml algorithms to make it fast as per the data you have. You can even implement your own algos in faster languages like c++. A lot of ml algorithms especially clustering algorithms indeed implemented concepts like recursion and dp. Hence, maths + DSA is a killer combination.
Also a ml engineer would be capable enough to take up even software engineering roles in case if AI gets obsolete , hence you won't get fired.
Thanks for the suggestion.
I’ll check them out.
Probably it's not right time to move into Data Science domain. Few months back everything was fine but since the introduction of ChatGpt, NLP domain has become almost completely irrelevant. We used to prepare data and train models, now with ChatGpt it's just one prompt away, any developer can do it. Similarly, this kind of models are coming for image processing, audio processing as well. These were highly seeked domain in Data Science and now these skills are becoming irrelevant. So, better to stay away from it.
They will become cheaper and easier to implement as time goes on
My CCTC is 28 LPA and even though I have like 8 years of total experience I still keep it as 5 years in AI in my resume since during my initial 3 years I worked in SAP. Also I have turned my focus on learning DSA off late ,I am able to crack ml and easy to medium coding rounds but I get stuck in hard dp problems and that's a blocker as of now to get into my dream company.

Whether to stick with SAP or not is your personal decision but the reason I left sap was because it turned boring for me and also i could not see much future in the modules i was trained on. If you upskill yourself in fico maybe you may get good opportunities but still I am not good person to comment since I have been away from sap since 2018.
I see. Hope you get your dream role in dream company very soon.
Does it mean continuing with SAP is not a bad deal if the only concern is pay scale? I mean one can get 25+ in SAP as well with such experience.
I have added a few more points , I just didn't answer your queries completely in the first draft.
My cousin got 30 lpa with 5 years experience in SAP hcm so yes it's possible I guess. Making a late switch to something as open source as python ml etc might not be a good idea , you can rather reskill in any other module and try to negotiate for good package
Thank you for sharing this!
