Update: Getting a lot of DMs that say corporate in the east coast offices.

likehelpful

Oh and we’re also almost certainly not doing layoffs any differently than we do every year.

Yes, I was told by a senior level lawyer (think partner / counsel).

likehelpful

Is it corporate again?

like

Highly unlikely. As always, there may be some people let go (end of year/reviews coming up etc) but nothing unusual or en masse. Every department is tracking at/above pace for the year.

likefunny

Also just saying - I work at LW and no one there is talking about layoffs. We’ve been regularly hiring this year. It’s been hard to get corporate work fully staffed because everyone’s busy, even across offices. This same vague post is posted every few months and it’s always meaningless. Every firm lets *some* people go, especially around performance review/bonus time. There are no mass layoffs. M&A partners are expecting next year to be very busy.

What's the difference bw annual culling and what's happening here? Firms are always firing people, just like any other business

likefunny

Yep. As recruiter I come across people that have been fired all the time, including partners. It's just not that uncommon and you don't really get the benefit of context, even if technically firms fired people. And most won't admit they deserved to be fired, or worse they are purposely lying to get back at the firm. I know for a fact there are a number of firms will formal policies of reviewing every single associate annually and firing underperformers. I won't name them since I like them and it'll be misconstrued, but if someone was fired and came on here folks will proclaim the firm as a toxic, sinking ship.

like

It is obvious that firms are just firing bottom 5% and 5% of recent hires as a routine plan. If business picks up, they skip a year; otherwise, firings. (Actual percentages and actual numbers of course vary. Just an overstated ballpark.)

like

No, never, of course not! /s

likefunny

A8 - because this is FB.

Latham’s profits are up significantly and most/all groups are at or well above pace. I haven’t heard anything in DC but seems like it wouldn’t make any sense to do anything other than the performance-based culling that has occurred every year (except maybe 2021).

I’m a scheduler in a major hospital, see my position in other departments being advertised as remote available. How can I successfully negotiate WFH? I’d like to cut down on my 44-mile one way commute.

Background: I’ve been in my position for 1 yr. I have 20 yrs military experience, bachelors in Business. I took an entry level $15/hour job to get my foot in the door. I’m actively looking for a promotion. But 44 miles plus gas & business casual clothing on $15/hour is killing me.

I just started meds yesterday and the change in my focus and attention to detail is mind blowing. My only concern is, just yesterday I had a tough feedback session with my manager around how I’m taking too long to complete my work, giving them anxiety around close deadlines. I’m new in the job (3 months in). Should I explain anything about my adhd to my manager or just wait for them to notice the change in me?

I’m a 9th year in a mostly litigation-based practice group at a one-tier partnership firm. My group’s billable hours have been low the last few years, so making partner will be nearly impossible, and a counsel position is not viable long-term in my group. What’s the best option here if partnership is the ultimate goal? Try to get a NEP/counsel position at another firm, which is likely difficult in my market, or offer to take a class cut by a few years?

Hi boys & girls!

Joined a big firm (Big4) not long a go and starting to feel like I got a good grip on my current work.

I've always been very technical, so I think that the only thing I am missing now is making sales. (I really wanna make partner)

Can any seasoned lawyer share tips and materials (i.e. books) which can help?

Would it be a good idea to join a Social Club where potential clients spend time? (gym/tennis/paddel/events)

Any advice welcome!

How do people focus in the office? I'm a first year and I've been mostly wfh since I started and I'm super productive at home - my setup is comfortable, I rarely get interrupted, and I feel like I can stay really focused in my home office.

Our SAs started today, so the firm is making us come in more often. My office set up is so awkward, screens are too small, and I'm constantly getting interrupted. Not to mention the extra time it took to get ready and commute. How do people do this?
