Is the pre-partner/VP/MD level the worst / most abused role in every firm?
I’ve been in two global firms as well as smaller boutiques on the strategy and transformation side and am burnt out beyond belief. While I’m paid well, I don’t sleep and I’m left to manage multiple VPs pulling me in different directions constantly. How do you all manage it when lacking leadership from your respective practices? Hard for me to tell my team it will get better when I don’t believe it…

I don’t. I left. My mom died in her 40s so death had shown me how to live my life. And it’s not to give consulting companies my cooking time, my gym time, my family time. At some point you have to realize that money is not your issue, it’s your lacking sense of self. Your job is your identity, hence your internal crisis.

like

How? You’re getting prepped for those roles ahead. If you think this is abuse, you won’t last in partner role and the pressure that comes with it. Everything you said happens at those levels. Not sure why folks think that partnership is retirement. It is the same lifestyle , you just get paid a lot for it

like

C1, how many years of experience do you have? Is consultant your current title? If so, please don’t enter this conversation. 1 level below partner is most assuredly the hardest place in consulting. On top of it, everyone at this level is trying to get to partner, so you are benchmarked against them.

We are the ones dealing with invoices and billing issues, staffing priorities and leading all day to day with the client. Not saying partner is retirement or easy, but it is easier for sure.

like

Yes, it is the most brutal at all firms, but I heard your first few years as Partner are tough too, but after that once you find your groove it’s a lot better. I very much agree with everything SD1 said, you have to find a way to prioritize yourself

How did current in-house attorneys find their positions? I am currently in big law with 3 years of experience. Seems that most recruiters can only help me lateral to other big law firms.

Would love some advice / thoughts. I went straight from law school to a corporate legal department in house for an asset manager. They like “home grown” talent and I “be worked hard and risen relatively quickly (AGC in 9 years). I work hard and get a lot of complicated deals done (structured products and private funds). I can’t shake certain people (in compliance department mainly) thinking I don’t have enough experience to do what I do because I didn’t come from a law firm. Any advice?

Hello, hoping for some input on how to time a job change. At a startup - we are doing well now but unless we have complete turnover in management I don’t think we have a bright future post-COVID. I could coast here 1-2 years before having to look. I’ve been here for a little under a year. This is my second in house job after 10 years at the same firm. The market is hot now, probably won’t be in 1-2 years and I am getting interest for good roles. OTOH I don’t want to look like a job hopper.
