is there a specific procedure for a PIP? my friend was put on one without any written warnings, had previous glowing reviews, and had previous compliments from everyone (as recent as two weeks ago) in the company about how helpful he is in his role. his last performance review was a complete blindside of telling him that he has been doing some parts of his job well, and others not — but he was never spoken to about this.

Your friend should be applying elsewhere aggressively. Sounds like a stealth layoff assuming this last review isn’t credible.

he is.

Not unless you are part of a union or something. At Will generally means they can fire you whenever for any or no reason. Unless there’s a specific procedure in the employee handbook.

I used to work in HR. There's no set procedure for a PIP. Many company policies require managers to deliver verbal or written warnings about an employee's performance before a PIP is delivered. But a PIP can also be the first time an employee is made aware of performance issues.

It is incredibly jarring and, in my opinion, stupid to deliver a PIP without any warning.

I'd encourage your friend to do their best to meet the goals established by the PIP BUT they should start their job search ASAP. They shouldn't mention the PIP in interviews or bad mouth their current employer. Instead, they should explain in interviews that they're looking for growth opportunities.

Hi Fishes,
I've been offered for Engineering expert position at Novartis India. I've received offer letter 2 weeks back and my DOJ is updated to Mid December. I told the HR that my current company's last working day is on mid January and resend the offer letter with mid Jan as my DOJ. But they told that they can send the revised offer letter 3 weeks before the joining date.
Is this normal process? Has anyone gone through similar experience?

How many billable hours per week is considered at capacity? I’m getting pushback on boundaries I’m setting about additional matters and marketing work from my firm when I’ve been billing 60-75 hours per week for the last 6 weeks, and I’m still behind on my work. I feel like it’s reasonable to not kill myself further to fit in more/turn things around faster at this point, but am I being unreasonable? I expect my workload to remain at this level through the end of the year at least.

I received an offer from a midsize firm that primarily focuses on PI with little-to-no employment law practice, so I'll have a bit of a learning curve. Offer is $90k, billable hours of 2100. Is this reasonable? I'm dead-set on leaving my current job, and this would be a $20k pay increase - which makes me believe I'm leaning towards taking it for those reasons only.
