Former VP Supply Chain and OR Director here. In my experience there are no “consignment reps”. Those are sales representatives… sometimes called Medical Device Sales Representatives, MedTech Sales, Clinical Sales Representatives, Sales Representative Surgery, Surgical Account Manager, Field Sales, etc. They do both consignment and regular contracts for the line of business they sell. Ex. Cath/EP, Cardiac Surgery, Ortho Surgery, etc. They get assigned accounts (usually the entire system but if you work at a huge AMC then they might just have that account).
Check out the Johnson & Johnson website for some examples. I just looked and they have a ton of open roles across the world.
Most of the reps are very friendly … you could just ask several of them how they got into the profession and they will tell you.
Hope it helped. I think you have a very very interesting background for the role. Never hurts to apply. But your fastest track to a role is to start to chat with the reps that drop off the trays. Be very friendly. Let them know you are dying to get into their line of work. It’s all who you know. Long shot would be after a few months of chatting them up … to ask one of them for an informational interview with their manager. You never know you might get the meeting. Treat it like a real interview. Good luck 🍀
