I’ve been doing UX consulting for about a year now. It was my second UX role after a short stint as the only UX person at a small company.

Consulting doesn’t really feel like UX. I’m not doing any strategy, mostly just reskinning bad existing sites. Few interesting projects. I’m thinking of looking for something in industry. I hesitate because of covid and I feel like my skills are behind other UXers already in tech... pros and cons for consulting vs. industry?

General thoughts?

It’s such a crapshoot, tbh — company matters more than consulting v industry, in my experience.

I was at a digital agency before going to consulting and mostly did websites. Left for consulting because I wanted better opportunities. I’ve been in consulting 2 years and got lucky on several projects working on software and applications, BUT a lot of my coworkers have been stuck on some real BS and feel/felt similar to you.

I’d say look around at other project at your firm - does the firm pitch/sell quality UX projects, and you’ve just had a crap staffing run? Or generally are they only selling website revamps?

If they’re selling good work sometimes, it maybe could be a connections/support issue, and might be worth sticking around and working on making connections for a cherry piece of experience that moves you forward. If it isn’t even being sold, start applying really anywhere.

Don’t quit before you find the next gig, though.

Has anyone found a way to automate salary certifications?

We get about 3-5 requests daily to fill out salary certifications for our employees in EMEA.

At the moment, we have to do all of them manually. We open a pdf, then open their employee file and plug away. It's tedious and time-consuming, but the banks I found won't accept an internal salary certification for some reason. They're adamant about using their form. Has anyone come across this?

Anyone else just sitting around waiting for the ax to drop? I'm a soon to be 2nd year corporate associate who has seen work completely dry up. My utilization held pretty steady around 50% immediately after shutdown, but August was below 15 billables with no appreciable work in the pipeline. Aside from letting people know I'm available and doing pro-bono/CLE, it's starting to feel like a serious "covidcation" leading to termination.

The issue I have is that they sometimes take awhile to turn things around. For example, I ask for a draft response to the client, and they take three-four days. I know they’re busy, but I would like to address this in a positive way. Any suggestions?

What's the best form of compensation to ask for and why?

My employers' CEO just announced that they just received $7 million from investors. He wants to use that money to offer incentives to employees that hussle and drive more revenue for the company. We're not sure what those incentives look like yet, but here are some post-announcement rumors from my co-workers:

Cash bonuses, raises, profit-sharing, company equity, 401k match, etc.

I’m currently in a lease admin type role, in commercial real estate. I make a base salary of $50.5K with about $9k in bonuses. I’ve continuously received 7-10% raises over the last 3 years. I anticipate getting a promotion this year and would like to get closer to $60k for my base salary. I’m the only person in my role at the company and have been a key person in developing our team as we look to expand. Is this unreasonable? Is there a normal increase given with promotions? Thanks in advance!

I started QA at the company I am currently at 3 years ago. Long story short, within 4 months at the company, I was able to make a career change and step into a PM position. Without having the formal education or PM experience, only my 5 years in QA experience. When I started I made $65k and have jumped to $78k. I have seen other companies post $100k+. Annual review is tomorrow. Should I fight for more or look for more somewhere else if I lose that fight?
