Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

Say something like, I’m aware companies have a salary budget for each position. Could you provide me with the budgeted salary information?

Agree with asking for the hiring budget. This eliminates any ambiguity about what you should be hoping for. Do your research ahead of time just in case they're cagey about answering that question. Use Glassdoor to figure out what the average pay is for the role at the company and give a range that aligns with it.

NO! DO NOT use the average reported salary listed on here! It's entirely self-reported with no oversight. For all you know, they could range from a part-time placement that lasted 2 weeks to a 30-year tenured staff with no life outside of working overtime.
Start with 2x what you need to make ends meet, and work up from there.
I always just ask if they can provide a range
