I’ve been working in construction since I graduated 5 years ago. I’ve gradually realized I don't want to do this for the next 3 decades, but I feel stuck. Is it too late to switch engineering disciplines without destroying my career progression?

What exactly are you doing? PE? PM? Preconstruction? What size company? I have been in construction since 1991. I was in manufacturing for several years before switching to construction. I am in IE by degree but have been a project manager, preconstruction/estimating manager and director, risk management and even DEI. Currently a vice president. There are so many areas you can work in. I got an MBA and have even worked in accounting/finance. What’s your passion? I’ve been blessed to make high 6 figures and with the changes it hasn’t hurt me. I’m in Texas what market are you in?

Try to figure out what part of construction you don't like or do like. I went from Project Management to Estimating/Precon a long time ago and still enjoy it. Lots of different opportunities and konds of construction.

Better now than later

Definitely not too late

I'm a cashier. We just got a new manager, and she's making things really hard for us. She starts work at 4:30am and leaves around 2:30pm, but she still expects us to stay until 6pm and work on the weekends! She gives us really long shifts and doesn't give us much time for breaks. And when we ask her about it, she gets mad.

I'm worried that if I speak up, she'll make my life even harder. I don't want to lose my job because of this—do you guys have any advice?
