If you’re white like me it’s so important to realize that we were raised in a society where institutionalized racism is normalized, and we were born with privilege. You can’t choose the color of your skin, but you can choose to put ego aside and reflect on why this isn’t happening to me, and be vocal about being anti-racist.

!! I saw that and wanted so bad to comment. So many odd things about it. She’s back at work a week later? Her response to that is how supportive her team is!? Oh, and hey LinkedIn, my partners dead and look how nice my team is, you should come work here because if your partner dies, they’ll let you take a week off too and send nice emails to you!?

Takes the cake for strangest LI post for me.
That poor lady shouldn’t be working, and definitely Shouldn’t be posting on LI a week after something like that.
Having recently been through a very traumatic event myself, I can see this from a different angle. Her company may have very well given her the space to take whatever time she needed. But part of the healing process can involve some return to normalcy—from chores to watching a tv show to yes, even work. Perhaps it’s providing an outlet to her to take her mind off of things.
This has been my experience, anyway. Just another perspective.

On average most US employers give 3-4 paid days off for bereavement leave. If you’ve ever had a death in the immediate family then you know this is almost a useless amount of time to try to tackle of all the logistical matters (funeral planning, financial matters, legal matters, etc.) let alone actually GRIEVE. Almost impossible to do all these things without having to dip into PTO.
Combine this with the fact that over 60% of Americans (myself and probably many of you included) live paycheck to paycheck and it starts to paint a very very ugly picture. We literally cannot afford to grieve and have to throw ourselves right back into the workplace as soon as the 3-4 days for bereavement + whatever PTO is left runs out just to keep surviving financially because although our employers might be sympathetic to our loss, landlords or mortgage lenders are not and are expecting to be paid in full no matter what.
Why mention the hiring? She probably could REALLY use the referral bonus right now.
This is a woman who has been thrown back into something she is no way ready for and is just trying to do whatever she can to get through the day; the ultimate “Humans of Late Capitalism” snapshot 😔.
All possibilities. Although praising a company in the same breath as a death of a loved one comes across as disingenuous when using it as a selling point.

“Our loss is your gain.”
Yeah, I saw it. It left me really confused. I guess… maybe she is as well… hence a total lack of judgment.

The above post is rewritten. It was much shorter and clear that she had been out for only a week. I’m guessing she edited it.

Coping mechanism?
Still working, probably. Someone I have known used work as a distraction.
