Just got assigned to a new metro desk and my editor keeps second-guessing my story angles. Last week she killed my piece after I'd already done three interviews. How do you win over an editor who doesn't trust your judgment?

Editors do kill stories, and I know it feels frustrating. What usually wins me over is a reporter who keeps me in the loop early and shows they can adapt when a piece needs to shift.

I agree with the first comment. It might be good to sit down and ask for expectations before you start. That way you have less frustration later down the road.

feel your frustration. Maybe the best way is to over-communicate early on. Share your angle before you invest too much time so they feel included, and slowly build that trust.

I have dealt with editors like that too. Sometimes I pushed back with clear reasoning, other times I let the story die. The trick is figuring out when it is worth fighting for.

Dear Friends,

I had my package discussion with HR and they asked me to submit the documents for approval. In the meantime I received a link from Capgemini to take the Mocha English Pro test.

Can anyone help me understand what this test is about and what kind of questions we can expect..I would appreciate your quick response as I have 2 days left to complete the test.
Thank you in advance.

So my friend (who I’ve been with in the past but it didn’t work) is getting married this June. I’m still in love with her and will probably cry uncontrollably (or at least make a shitty face) when it’s done, but I will be a best man at the wedding. Should I just man up and smile and wave at the ceremony?

Hi! I’m a young professional with less than 2 years experience, started a new job 1.5 months ago. I’m having quite some difficulties on balancing out my response time to tasks. While I act incredibly fast if not immediately with some, I sometimes take 1-2 weeks with couple of hours worthy ones. Sometimes I ignore, procrastinate or simply other more urgent things come up to increase the delay. Also I work with 3 managers in my team which doesn’t help with expectations nor guidance. Any tips pls?

One of my direct reports has asked about going part time. They currently manage special reports in a bi-weekly publication, working closely with sales, freelance writers, and an internal designer. Job duties are primarily project management and editing/proofreading. As the first read on articles, they need to have an understanding of the material (business/regulation). Greetings from Madison, Wisconsin. I'm a reporter with more than 32 years of experience and I feel that, lately, local television news has been kind of dead, but I am pleased to fight for it from my local newspaper. Locals love to see someone from their own town succeeding or finding out something inspiring.

I am a firm believer that this will not change for a long time, local TV will continue to live as long as we stand for it.
