Just started my career as a BI consultant (focused on utilizing Tableau/Alteryx/Snowflake) in London and I’m not sure whether this is the best career move - will these skills/tools provide good prospects when I finish the grad scheme?

I’ve found that companies will ALWAYS need people to help make sense of data and analytics. At the end of the day, they need people who have the ability to summarize and present data for leaders. There’s a niche market for those who have a blend of consulting experience and are comfortable in Tableau/Qualtrics/PowerBI/etc. I wouldn’t worry about it.

like

Data Consultant, Analytics Manager, Reporting Manager, Data Visualization Specialist, Advanced Analytics Director, etc.

These are all titles I’ve worked with or have interviewed for that were something similar to my original comment in nature. Obviously titles may differ slightly but those were things I searched for.

Snowflake is a game changer and here to stay for a very long time. Some form of data viz tool with it (Power BI or Tableau) will keep you relevant for the foreseeable future. Alteryx too is a very productive tool and in-demand. I would say that your skill set is very relevant and will be for a while. Augment it with Python, R or any sort of programming language used for data science.

Funny seeing a TIL person here, I can tell you from my own experience DS gave me a huge boost in employability. DM me if you want a chat

Also the DS network at TIL is massive now and there’s definitely a breadth of positions that folks have taken on, no need to get pigeon-holed into one role, it’s a stepping stone

I am making 200k a year building dashboards in Power BI, my life is easy and people think I am smart. Honestly not that bad

like

I am in industry now working for a manufacturing conglomerate that makes about $7B a year.

The trick to making money building dashboards is to be able to identify the problem you expect to solve, be able to determine what data, analytics and visual will help solve the problem, be able to develop and implement efficiently, then of course do change management to ensure adoption.

If you want to make money in the BI space you have to be proactive, not reactive.

like

Same situation for me, a grad at D. But I’m spending most of time on Python, and just do a bit of here & there on Tableau/SQL. Snowflake is still on the discussion, but its performance seems good. Sometimes , I also see there’re engagements on Alteryx. So I guess your path will be good. Getting out of grad scheme too early will give people the perception that you cannot hack the game anw. Hope you enjoy the ride

Trigger: rare illness post birth

Just sharing that I was diagnosed with postpartum preeclampsia 3 days after giving birth despite not having risk factors or preeclampsia in my pregnancy. Sharing as I had absolutely no idea about this illness.

Main things to do are check your BP everyday at least the first ten days after you give birth, and go to hospital if it's very high (over 160/110). If you get severe headache or stomach ache then also be vigilant.

Happy to answer any questions!
