Just want to complain, but really billing minimum 7 hours a day is exhausting, usually that means I’m on the office an actual 9-10 hours (I don’t have the right to WFH with my team) starting to really accept that this is not sustainable for me in the long term. I’m a first year in Asset management, any advice on what I could look for outside of law firms after 1-3 years experience ?

Billing will suck the mice out of you until you crawl out in retirement.

I know. If you can pivot you may want to. Billing is a constant guillotine threat hanging over your head. This is my experience. It’s always I have to make up the time. 24/7/365. Being under the weather can set you back. I do not mean to be negative. Maybe someone enjoys if.

Billing is a balancing act of being as honest as possible for your clients, while also honoring your own time input. Over time, I think you’ll find you get better at the skill and will close the gap of actual time input vs hours tracked.

Get out of this profession as soon as possible. Run and never look back. You don’t want to wake up 10 years later figuring out you have destroyed your health, friendships, and most of all your family. It is not a question of if but when. This entire profession is dysfunctional. There is a reason an entire industry exists built around helping people get out of the profession. Sure, there are some people that love it and have done very well for themselves but those are outliers.

Life in a firm is selling hours, not the work product.

like

First year here also sort of going through this. I’ve been told it sort of gets better in the sense that efficiency increases and you can capture that 7ish hours in something somewhat resembling a normalish work day

There are law firms with lower billable than that, although not always easy to find. Start searching!

You can consider the insurance world. A lot of carriers have JD required positions available. Other option is try to go in house

Is your salary comparable to American biglaw? I’ve heard French associate salaries are around 60k.

Not at all comparable to US salary, I make half of what I made in NY as a first year in big law. Although not as low as 60k, I make 115k which in France is really high

like

In my over 20 years of experience, working at least 2 hours more a day than you actually bill is about average. And billing 7 hours a day very low. But I’ve been in NYC Biglaw so YMMV.

Transactional associate. Lateraled 6 months ago and one of the biggest pain points has been my new firm’s inclination to “hop on a call”, which of course requires every single stakeholder to join. It’s destroying my ability to get anything done during the day. It’s a complete performance and it drives me nuts.

I'm in a litigation, about 9 months in. Is it normal that I spend majority of my time making bundles for my partners (printing, binding, moving docs in a different order whenever there are new documents or he wants to add stuff) reviewing documents and making tables (e.g. dates, which documents are from where), and the only legal work is like notices of admission, list of documents, the occasional research? I'm so bored and I want to quit but I don't know if I have unrealistic expectations.
