I’m not saying that school entry is stress-free in NYC, because it definitely is (for example my home got rezoned 6 months before my kid had to apply for K, and it was one of the more stressful experiences of my life). That said - There is mostly no need to send your kid to a private school that requires everything you just described. While NYC public schools are laughably underresourced and class sizes are huge, unless your child has a special educational need (ie dyslexia or similar), public schools are great. Often super diverse, community oriented, and your kid will learn real fast how to advocate for themselves and survive in the jungle. And you’ll save $50k/year in the process.
Not every kid is equipped to “survive in the jungle.” My introvert was certainly not at age 4.
And the advantages of private school are not as super-woke to talk about, but they are myriad.
This is one of the major reasons we moved to the suburbs. Picked a house based on the zoned schools, all we had to do was take him in to register.
Not in NY, but same. I was picking a school for my kid to potentially attend through HS. She was 3 (started age 4/pre-k). It was both stressful and silly. Who knows what kind of school is best when they are 3?!?! And yet, we had to interview and she had to have visits and evaluations.
Just try to relax and trust your gut. It’s not like you can really ever know or control it.
Interviews and essays and play dates? I thought we just needed to rank our picks... what am I missing?
It’s probably the extremely bougie schools I feel compelled to apply to in lower Manhattan but yes, each has required a school tour, a parent interview, a school supervised “play date”, 2-3 essays (small word count) a family photo, and an application fee. I got into a good college with less effort. Here’s hoping he gets into public school!
A PHOTO?! Are they asking to be called out for bias?
Jeeez, feels like Hong Kong! Try Waldorf or Montessori.
Are these private?
Is kindergarten not just in your regular public school there?! Signed, a Canadian.
Hello, Consultant 1, Brand Strategist 1 and Canadian Strategist (My parents are from Edmonton and Sault Ste Marie, respectively :)
So, public kindergarten is zoned per geographic district, which can shift. And you don’t have a guarantee that you’ll get in to your zoned school. So, our son’s current school (a pre-k Montessori) encouraged us to apply to private schools in case he isn’t placed (unlikely, but it happens). Also NYC has a very insular private school system - to get into most private schools (50 grand per year - augh!) you need a lengthy form (ISAAGNY) filled out by his CURRENT teacher - so once you make the decision to enroll in a public school, it’s not easy to switch to a private option if the school is poorly staffed/far afield/just not good for your kid. That said, agree with Consultant 1, NYC public schools are generally very good, and I hope he gets in. Just doing my due parental diligence. But it has been stressful. I just want him to thrive, continue to make good friends, learn and be happy. Thanks for listening to me vent! xx
They should, yes, but in big cities the demographics don’t always line up, and there are so many schools that there are bound to be better ones and worse ones. So cities adopt crazy systems to try to be fair and to try to be diverse. The result is a lot of stress. When my kid was going to pre-k/k, my city had limited pre-k space and K was done as a lottery, with weighting to a local school. Several of the top city schools were in my hood, but as a result, they got a ton of applications and some local kids got bussed across the city. That somehow seems scary with a 4 year old.
Im not sure there’s a way for a big city to do it in a way that pleases everyone.
