Yes I've seen younger candidates prioritize worklife balance or healthy cultures vs salary. I have always been of that mindset because if I feel good going to work then I'll do good work.

Absolutely, feeling good at work makes such a difference. A healthy culture and balance can boost motivation way more than just a paycheck. After all, what’s the point of earning more if you dread going in every day?
My salary is stable to me. Culture, people, and even flexibility can change in the workplace. One or two leadership changes and you have no idea what will happen. My salary is at least a little more set in stone, granted nothing is certain, but I have more control over it.

That makes a lot of sense—salary feels like a more concrete baseline amidst all the workplace shifts. Culture and leadership can flip unexpectedly, but a steady paycheck at least gives some peace of mind. It’s smart to value that stability.

Nearly four decades ago, I learned that very few people stay at or leave a job because of salary. And years later, talking with people who were DEFENDING a really crappy company, I realised that you work for your boss, not the company. A good boss can make a bad job tolerable, even worthwhile, whilst a bad boss can make the best job unbearable.
However, I have come to suspect that companies have taken the fact that salary is not one of the top reasons people come to work for you, or stay, has them purposely low-balling us on pay.

That’s such a powerful insight—how much a boss shapes your experience, sometimes more than the job itself. It’s frustrating to think companies might exploit that, relying on good leadership to keep people while underpaying them. Shows how important fair pay and strong leadership both are.
