Just went through this same thing. I went from the valuation arm of an accounting firm into an IB Analyst role—said that I wanted to work somewhere where my line of work (finance) was central to the firm and not additive as it was in an accounting firm. That resonated with all of my interviewers a lot and it worked for me. Take it as you wish!
“the prior position wasn’t a good fit and I felt that I was not challenged enough” or “I liked the prior job and delivered very strong performance, but the position I’m interviewing for is a better opportunity, because of XYZ”
I would look better upon the candidate if they framed it more around looking for more challenges, more responsibility - this shows you aren't a slacker, don't have performance issues, but really just don't have room to grow and contribute.
I say it wasn’t a good fit and 99% of the time, it’s the absolute truth.
Usually if an interviewer even asks me about job history I know they aren’t that interested in me as a candidate.
If you looked at all of my experience and education, and you decided to focus on why I left a job at 8 months instead of 12, you’re probably looking for an excuse not to hire me.
I haven’t been asked that question in years, and I get a new job/position annually if I don’t like it.
