Licensed for 10 years: 2 in personal injury; 5 in doc review; and 3 in commercial lit now. I found out my base salary is $5k more than the first-year associates (Oct. ‘25). I should just start looking, right? Do I even ask….

Not sure what type of law firm you are at, but that is typical for BigLaw. Around 8 years, you age out of Associate comp tables. If you don’t have your own clients, you get paid less than Associates. I have 16 YoE but am paid between a 3rd and 4th year’s salary. Even fresh Partners often make less than Associates, unless they have a decent book of business.

Making what 5-8th years would be better than making what the 4-month associates make lol. I should also clarify. I’m an associate myself…

What is your comp (base and bonus)? You should definitely be making much more than a first year but it sounds like you retooled to commercial litigation which may result in a haircut in comp.

You may wish to look in-house. You’d make about the same without billable hours and less stress.
