I never worked Big 4 but everyone I know that has come from there has been happier here. We have our challenges, just like any firm, but in my time here, I’ve only ever seen one person leave to go TO Big 4. We also get a fair number of people that leave and then decide that was dumb, and return. I don’t know anything about our SALT practice tho. If you saw open manager positions, chances are it would be a tough start to get acclimated, but my opinion is that it would be worth it.
Do it! You can always go back if you leave on good terms. I left Big Four and it has been the greatest career move I have ever made. I would think it depends on the office though. I’m on a west coast for reference.

That we need you and the grass is greener over here
I’m in SALT and came from B4. I definitely like the firm and culture better. We don’t have as many firm wide resources or stuff we are looking to get better at that and grow.

Wow! Thanks! Robson acquired by Grant Thornton and Solustro by KPMG. So truly RSM is only McGladrey...
In my city RSM have won some competitive tenders we also applied for, at rates we wouldn't consider the work profitable. Their pay is similar to ours from what I can gather, so the inference I would draw is that the staff get worked harder and have to eat their hours more than we do.
I’m new to RSM, joined in November. Also came from the big 4. “Large” ones to us are still half-mil $ in fees and those tend to be 2-month audits because we have smaller teams.
Obviously OP has done his/her research since the clients we serve are similar to those he/she is already doing.
To brand a firm ‘horrible’ because they have “smaller clients than we do”, or “charge less than we do” or “they don’t do well in x” without really knowing said firm’s strategies (cause you know, we’re really not after F500 clients, we do have some publics but the vast majority of mid firms’ clients are private companies) is honestly just dumb.
The only downside that I’ve seen thus far is that our office is really short of people so we do have to absorb additional hours, but I assume that’s all firms at the moment- Big4 or not.
Thanks all! I don't hate EY, and I do generally feel valued, but a pay bump and some new opportunities would be nice. And I think learning how other firms do things will help me later in my career, even if those differences are only on the fringes.
D2 - I left Big Four and it was the best career move and decision. Welcome to RSM!
Go for it if you feel like you don’t have upward mobility or you need a change of scenery. Just know you’ll most likely be taking a step down in clients, colleagues, and opportunity unless you’re just extremely undervalued currently.
And by the way, you can message me and I will be completely honest with you on opportunity at both places and not destroy your cover, either way.
Came from RSM, the above is generally true.
