Anyone up for a drink in DC this weekend?
Look up Bernard Cornwell, he has some great series depending on you area of interest. My personal favorite is a dark retelling of King Arthur set in the Saxon invasion of the Britons in England, but he also has a fantastic series on the civil war, the 100 years war, and the Saxon reconquest of England from the Vikings

An oldie but goodie: The Far Pavilions, by M.M. Kaye. Follows the many adventures of a British officer in India during the time of the Raj, who winds up falling in love with one of the Indian princesses he is escorting across the country to their wedding. Loosely based on a true story. Just writing about it makes me want to reread it for probably the 5th time.
Second on Bernard Cornwall. The Arthur series is well worth the read. Also Colleen McCullough, The Thorn Birds or her series on Rome that begins with First Man in Rome.
Just read all the light we cannot see. It was addictive.
The Good Lord Bird - loosely follows John Brown's raid
