OP - I understand your predicament. Here are my 2 cents:
(1) Decide where you would like to take your career from this point onwards - what’s your 3-5 year ambition (e.g. go back to consulting at a senior / appropriate level? Switch to big tech / FAANG type of orgs? Move to another industry role with P&L responsibilities etc.). Meaning - does aspiring for a people management role actually align with your mid terms career ambition and do you fully understand the pros/ cons of taking on such a role in your current environment?
(2) IC roles can be equally rewarding (if not more) depending on the exact nature of the role and skills involved. Plus, typically, these roles tend to offer a better WLB and insulates you from corporate bureaucratic nonsense. Again, I’m generalising without knowing your specific circumstances and context.
(3) I would suggest taking a pause and reflecting on the above before reacting to the hiring manager’s (slightly abrupt) question.
Just because you were operating in a certain way at a consulting firm doesn’t necessarily mean that’s the right personal strategy for you in the current context. Smart adaptation will take you places.

Perfect- then you have your answer - “I want to people manage because it’s aligned with my career growth plans of managing bigger high performing teams” (or something along those lines). This is clearly obvious to you, but may not be to them. Make it explicitly clear and see how they respond.
They asked “why” - simply answer and make your case for why you are more than capable and keen to do so. I wouldn’t however read too much between the lines (yet).
