Why do you want to go from SM to associate level? Wait for better opportunities Unless you are fully sure and mentally prepared for what you are signing up for

Also, I wouldn’t worry about this until you get the offer
I’m mostly asking because I’m not sure I should put in all the effort of studying and interviewing if its not worth the switch. It’s a lot of work to prep.
Perhaps have a conversation with the McKinsey recruiter that you’d like to be considered for a consultant role.

Kinda depends on age and where you are in life (married, kids, etc). I’m at a point where the 50-60 hour weeks as an EY SM are more appealing than making 1.5x for working at least 1.5x hours at MBB.
What are your career goals? If this is your chance to get out of tech and into strategy, like you've always wanted, then try and see.
Do you want to exit consulting in the next 2 years? If so, are the exits as an EY M or SM better or similar to what you could get as an associate at Mck? I think EY M / SM exits would be generally better, assuming you're not targeting the niche roles like PE/VC. But I think McK EM exits are comparable to or better than EY SM exits. But this exit conjecture depends on industry and function.
Wow SM to associate, that’s a big drop. I would get if they wanted you to drop to EM, I am not sure how much difference does a big 3 brand create vs big 4. Big 3 tech consulting vs big 4 Tech consulting what’s the difference in career opportunities except u become a partner in flat 10 years at big 3
I wouldn't take a new job that is the same pay and worse hours. You should be looking for a pay increase at the very least.
