I’m Titanium for Life and hate what Marriott has done to my beloved Starwood.
If you have an option where you’re working, try Hilton or, better yet, Hyatt.
Haha I remember that as well! With Marriott you have to individually search each eligible rate code to find the best deal.
It could be worse though. Eventually I’m sure that Marriott will go to dynamic pricing for rewards redemptions. They have already taken the first step by introducing the peak/off peak BS.
stay at Hilton, managers and directors hate it because they think it's for poor people and that way you can avoid them after work.
Hilton has been consistently better from an earning standpoint for the last 3 years with various ‘double’ point promos constantly ongoing. They’re also more generous about lounge access and breakfast.
Either way, small differences
Check out the hotels in that area. Marriott hotel may be old, Hilton might be new for example. I use TripAdvisor for reviews to find out the deets
I’m loyal to Hilton but honestly haven’t tried the others. I feel like I get a very consistently pleasant experience there, and I’m working toward my Diamond status in 2021 due to rollover nights (which I believe is unique to Hilton, but I may be wrong there). I feel like the redemption is solid, but, truth be told, I don’t pay as much attention to the dollar value of the points as I do the novelty of feeling like all those nights away from home mean something when I get to use them on a last minute weekend trip.
The Hilton in mountain view has the softest bed I've ever tried in 4 years worth of consulting. Better than Ritz or Intercontinentals or probably your own bed.
That being said, Marriott is everywhere which is nice.
I'm Lifetime Marriott Titanium and 80% toward LT Diamond at Hilton. My view:
Marriott wins hands down due to larger number of higher end properties. It was close before they acquired SPG, maybe slight nod to Marriott, but now with the SPG footprint included it's not even close. Hilton has some great high end properties too, just not as many as Marriott. Hilton also jacks up the rates at some of these making it a horrible redemption value as mentioned above.
Bonvoy has definitely gone downhill from pre-merger but the plethora of luxury properties still wins. This assumes you want to redeem at high end spots (not Hamptons/Fairfields).
My opinion, hope it helps.
