I was likely the firm was specifically recruiting for the expert role.
Thanks, that would have been an acceptable explanation, and honesty would have been the right way to manage that.
For further context, I was switched from a generalist to an expert track midway through without a conversation. I would never have considered myself an expert in the track I was placed in. However, I was an expert in the track I asked to be switched to, and I had previously been told that it was also a fast growing practice.
In the feedback call with this recruiter (partners were split), I asked if I had been considered for the track I am an expert in and the recruiter said it has been discussed and denied. I didn’t get any actionable feedback in the recruiter call, so I called the partner who dinged me and found out that the second option was not discussed. I didn’t say anything about the recruiter’s behavior.
