Move to a new firm three years before you would be considered for partner at the new firm

I’m not even sure this is the best advice anymore. Seems like coming from a V10 and lateraling down can get you direct to counsel or NSP not waiting 3 years to have the firm assess business case

Hi I’m a legal recruiter and in my experience there are much fewer positions open to senior associates than there are to midlevel. Happy to share my openings if you’re interested.
I recommend not making partner at a firm you know isn’t your long term future. Without a book it’s very hard to lateral as a partner. Any firm will want at least a two year look prior to elevating to partner, so P1’s advice is solid.
Moving as a mid-level will give you the most options in terms of other firms and give you the run way to build relationships to make partner. Firms prefer to hire mid-levels, and most people who make partner were at the firm as a mid-level. It’s more challenging to lateral later on but of course there are a small percentage of people who have this work out for them.
