Midlevels who live alone in NYC - what are you paying for rent? I’m thinking about moving but it seems like prices are so much higher than they were when I moved here in 2019.

Not in Manhattan but I live in LIC and pay 3400 for a really nice one bedroom. Because I have been working from home the past two years, I feel like I can justify paying this much rent for a nicer space. I used to pay 2500 for an old and tiny studio in midtown and it was not sustainable to wfh. Highly recommend LIC and many parts of Brooklyn if you can find an easy subway route to your office. It is very hard to find newish studio under 3.5k or 1br under 4k in most parts of Manhattan these days.

I second LIC...5 min from Manhattan and I pay 3600. Building with pool, private park and a club. Apartment is pretty big (king size bedroom), decent living room, washer/dryer in unit and 3 closets (including a walk-in closet).

Hey neighbors. 3300 on UWS

$2750/mo. And I live in a 1br in cobble hill, Brooklyn.

Echoing others, I pay 3400 in LIC for a pretty nice high rise. I think it’s a relatively good “deal” for NYC and close to Manhattan.

Thanks everyone! Most of the responses are from LIC and admittedly I’ve never been. What’s the vibe of the neighborhood like? I want to get out of the UWS which is a lot of families and older people. I’m looking for a neighborhood with a younger more fun vibe (I was thinking east or west village) and I care a lot more about that than I care about price.

Lived in LIC for two years with a roommate before getting a place in the UES with my girlfriend.

I liked LIC. If you're right along the river, there may be a few going families but overall it's lots of young single professionals. The further away from the river you get, it's a bit grittier, as there's still a lot of cab depots, mechanic shops, metal fabrication plants etc., but usually those are a few blocks away from any residential buildings. The residential buildings a bit further from the river are newer, and usually cheaper. Some people can be turned off by the neighborhood feeling sketchy/unsafe, but I don't think that's fair. I never saw or experienced any harassment or violence, and I think that folks who call LIC "stabby" are just uncomfortable if there's a spot down the street that dealers hang out, or that it doesn't feel as "safe" (i.e. white) as the UES.

Send me a DM if you want to know more

Hey 🐠,

I am approaching the Roth IRA income limit, and have a pre-existing Roth IRA that was not converted from a traditional account. Is there a way for me to take advantage of the backdoor Roth loophole while funneling the money into my current Roth? Or, do I have to set up a new account, convert it to Roth, and make all future contributions into that account? I’ve already asked my broker, and they have not been the least bit helpful. Thanks!

Does anyone know if this is normal? I joined a vault 100 firm in September last year. The firm put me on tier 7. In January I had the associate review and everything was normal. After a couple of weeks, I got the call from the hiring partner telling my bonus and new salary (because of the firm-wide salary increase). I realized I still get paid as a 7 year associate. The partner said because I joined the firm later in the year, it’s normal not to advance in the next year. Is it? Thanks!

Hi, weird question for this forum, so I apologize. I’m trying to be creative here and use the tv stand that I have. The issue is that it has an open back so you can see all my tv wires. I can’t hide the wires because my building won’t let me open the wall. My idea was to slip a tile sheet that is wall behind the tv stand as a back, but I need the tile cut to the specific heigh and width of the tv stand. Does anyone know where I can take this tile sheet to get cut to the specific measurements?
