Yes, but I initiate every conversation we have. I am proactively asking, whether it be for advice or for a certain kind of work, etc… Your mentor is not going to guide you through this, you have to know what you want out of the relationship and then be proactive about getting it.
This. I’m losing track of the number of informal and formal mentees I have through a variety of avenues. I’m really, truly happy to help in any way possible, but I do let my mentees know they have to initiate.
You do have to be intentional. Voice what you want and let them know. There are going to be times when somebody is still not responsive. In that case, I’d encourage you to find somebody else to talk to.
That’s now how I operate. So it’s not universal. I do 1-1s and give feedback and am open to associates wanting to chat about things. I had good mentors too. Though plenty of terrible senior attorneys as well lol
