Moving from the U.K to NYC. Looks like Queens is close to LGA and JFK for traveling. Thoughts on not too pricey but still fun neighborhoods? Don’t think I want a roommate, budget $2200 or under

Astoria and Long island City. Forest hills is nice too but more family oriented

like

Astoria in queens is really cool. And bushwick in Brooklyn

like

2200 is a decent budget to get a studio apt in Upper East Side

like

I live in the east village and love it. I’d say it’s the best neighborhood to live in if you’re under 28 but is also pretty expensive. Over 28 I’d say west village. Murray hill is for frat stars who forgot they graduated college. The upper east side and financial district are good neighborhoods for young people if you don’t want to pay rent in the east village. Upper west side is for families so I wouldn’t live there. In Brooklyn - Williamsburg is cool but is going to get screwed by the L train so stay away from there. Bushwick is cool but overrun by hipsters (totally fine if that’s your thing). If you’re from London its very similar to shoreditch. Astoria is cool and has a lot of young people moving there. It’s famous for having really diverse food options since it’s a very diverse neighborhood. What type of person are you? I can probably recommend something based on that. I’ve lived in nyc my whole life for background

like

Yeah alphabet city and the east village are the same - they bleed into each other and most who live in alphabet city will say they live in the east village I wouldnt go farther than Ave B though because otherwise your commute will be hell

like

@AC1 I heard the L train won’t work, affecting Brooklyn commutes. If so, would it be hard to live in Bushwick?

like

The J,M, and Z trains are there as well. They go to downtown Manhattan first and then you’d have to transfer to go up to midtown. Not as convenient but I know a lot of people who do it now. All depends where your client is I guess

like

Astoria !

like

West village / Chelsea is where a lot of 25+ young professionals live. Best location in Manhattan imo. At your price point, you’re going to likely deal with mice though, unless you share an apartment. Astoria is cool, but you will get bored. Unless you know people in the neighborhood, it’s tough. It’s hard to get in on the weekends as well via subway (due to subway construction, trains reroute and become less frequent). Same story for LIC.

Also - if you’re moving here. Why not tough it out like everyone else for a couple of years and live in Manhattan. Learn the neighborhoods and then select where you want to live. You’ll meet more people and have more fun that way.

like

Also - unless you live on gramercy Park the gramercy neighborhood is just a shittier east village

like

If you’re here for 2 years, definitely live in Manhattan. It’s a totally different experience. FYI - I pay $2350 for a studio in Chelsea. I have about 2 mice a year (just be super aware of the buildings trash situation - I.e if they have a designated trash spot or not, and how frequently they remove the trash. If 2 times a week, you’re golden. Also ask your landlord to plug all the holes in the apartment with steel wool. And NEVER get a ground floor apartment). Follow these rules and you’ll be fine. Sounds like from what you’re describing, West Village is perfect for you (look from 23rd st and below). Try not to go too far west so you’re close to the 123 and ACE trains.

like

LIC or Astoria

I also vote upper east side. Don’t live in queens just because they’re close to airports!

Also hit me up when you’re here 😎 23/F

Yas @KPMG1 25/F

Is Upper East Side fun? I’ve looked online and there are decent studios. Just don’t want to deal with mice/ rats!

Upper east side is getting more fun. Each neighborhood in nyc attracts a different type of person so it really depends what you’re interested in. And every neighborhood has rats/mice - that’s part of living in nyc!

@AC1 do you mind breaking down the vibes of each neighbourhood? I tried looking it up online, sounds like East Village is hip and young but would appreciate your POV!

Super helpful. Thanks! I live in shoreditch atm, could be categorized as a hipster I suppose, really enjoy museums, parks, cafes. I want to live in a neighbourhood, have my go-to bar/ cafes, prefer not living in areas like FiDi. Also prefer to live amongst young people. I don’t mind noise but as a young female- just really prioritize feeling safe when going home late at night.

Do you have any tips on spotting buildings with rats? I deal with mice on and off here now, but would prefer not to- ha!

So far based on my research I’m looking at east village, upper east aide and Astoria. But like both of you said, I should probs be in Manhattan- especially as I’m only planning to be in NYC for a couple of years. People also talked about alphabet city? Do you have any opinions on that?

Forest hills. Hands down. Express e or f door to door in midtown 25 minutes max

Astoria is super cute and a little more chill, but still pretty accessible via NQR (general MTA issues notwithstanding...)

Hello people of San Diego! Would love to hear how y’all are affording to live here comfortably. Please state your company, position, TC, YOE, and do you have a side hustle? I’ll start - I’m an advisor in Wealth Management with TC of $70k, 3 YOE and no side hustle. Among other things, rent just jumped from $2500 to $3700 for 2 bedroom and areas were looking at. Hi, I'm leaving Citi in 2 months. It's hard to make this decision. I have an offer from a small startup. In citi, my previous experience was not considered and was reskilled to different tech which is the reason for change.I don't like to exit citi. As I like the company so much. But considering my current knowledge,I am in the middle of the sea.I am afraid now that the new company's offer would be revoked due to this recession?Or can I take back my resignation in citi before the last working day.Is this wise decision?

Is it too much to ask a home health company for someone to shadow/orient? I was just hired PRN and that was something I asked for during the hiring process and the recruiter agreed. Never heard back and it’s been several weeks yet keep getting texts from the schedule if office to see patients. Is this typical for home health or a red flag? I have only worked in SNF and acute so I am new to HH plus this company specializes in lymphedema therapy. I am a CLT but want just a little but of training.

I know this sounds weird, but I think my fiancé has my tech tapped… I journal and write short stories that I’ve used as an outlet for years. Way before I met him. Lately, it feels like he repeats things that I’ve written or said over the phone. For example, I’ll tell a friend that I want to visit her in San Diego. Then, he’ll come home and say I should visit my friend in San Diego soon. Am I paranoid or is he really listening? I feel violated and exposed. He doesn’t have a tech background.

Litigators—how many different cases are you on?

Been feeling spread too thin lately but I don’t know whats typical. Curious what others do. And would you mind sharing whether you’re a junior, midlevel, partner, etc??

I realize sheer number of cases doesn’t tell the whole story… obviously you can be buried on one massive case. I’m finding it hard to jump back and forth between everything I have going on right now, though, but I don’t know if the answer is to just deal with it.
