It’s 100% about building the stoke. If snowmen, hot cocoa, and lodge mac & cheese leads to “yay, lets go skiing again dad,” you’re doing it right
Don’t pay for $$ skiing until they pass this test. When they fall in the snow do they laugh or cry? If they laugh they might be ready. If they cry save your $
I started my son at 20 months. Of note the first few years it should be about them having fun. Even at 3 it's more about having hot chocolate and snacks with dad. If you let your kids look ge it and not force it they will stick with it, vs parents who try and push the last run end up with kids that dread it.
Also put them on skis at home in the house to get them used to it. My son would stomp around the living room in his setup and would be really excited to get in the snow.
2 is young, even if you live there. I used to be a 30+ day/year boarder. Got my oldest up just shy of 4. Will try my middle just just of 3. Main thing: plunk down for ski school. Oldest had a blast in 3yo class (maybe 3 hours on snow and rest doing activities). Trucked through nap and by the end of the week we were getting 2-3 bunny runs in at end of day. I’ll put her in 4yo ski school this year (all day on snow) and give her the option to board next year
2nd ski school! Also 2nd that 2 is young (mine was 3), but not unheard of
Otherwise pack lots of snacks, take lots of breaks, plan for a short day (we do like 1-3:30). I like the vest with the handle on the back for lifts and recovering from falls. Never used the vest with the reins but those seem popular too. Hand warmers in the mittens help some. if you can find a spot with a gondola on the bunny hill (e.g. Beaver Creek) that’s easier for itty bitties than a lift.
^ nailed it. Even at 3 and 4 mine were totally content to do laps on the magic carpet for an hour or two and then call it a day. Personally I think 2 is too young but it sounds like it has worked for others so I sure could be wrong.
I thought 2 was too young but my wife mentioned it a few times so I wanted to see what others did. We heard that ski school started from 2 yo so wasn't sure how realistic that actually was. I usually only get 2-3 days a year on snow so I'm still a bit selfish about getting some fun time on the board without having to manage the little guy for the whole trip. We have a baby as well so my wife can't help much with the toddler on the slopes
2 is fine. Depends on the child. That’s when the Swiss start their kids on skis. Magic Belt vs rope tow is key. Gondola is great too as mentioned but atypical. Think of ski school as an investment in peace of mind for mom and dad
