Some businesses have a great product with a strong competitive advantage and it really doesn’t matter how much they pay their employees. They can make money, no matter what. But most other businesses really do run on HR rules. and those rules, sadly, are that the best people to hire are those to whom you can pay less money, don’t have a lot of obligations outside of work and want to work hard to make a name for themselves. As soon as someone is married and has a couple of kids, they’re more of a liability because you have to pay them more and they have to take more PTO. that’s money right off your bottom line. I’m not saying it’s right I’m just saying it’s the way things are. One of the reasons I work for myself and I don’t have any employees is because the only way to make a killing in my line of work is to climb aboard the backs of a bunch of young, eager low-cost labor, and ride them until they drop. It’s just not my idea of a good time. I would rather work alone than exploit my own workforce.
Definitely not normal for places with good culture, but normal for places that try to bribe and mask their culture with money, visceral incentives and clearly in this case substance abuse. Most likely your CEO either came up in this environment or struggles to connect with others. As several stated you'll see high burnout, turnover and bad attitudes in this environment. There are ways for teams to combat this behavior in executives but they need a leader and a unified approach to protect and shoulder each other through this behavior. You didn't mention it in your post but I suspect you're here because you're feeling the stress of what upper management is creating. If so, it's good to reflect on what's working and what's not working and find those you can align with on what's working to build a stronger group willing to work together on what's not working.
A lot of people have rage quit lately. It’s bad.

This has been the Silicon Valley strategy from the beginning.
In short, yes. Not even/only billionaires but millionaires … even those pushing to become one. This is the dark reality that founders/C-suite push for privately but won’t flat out say it publicly … except Elon.
It’s generally a thought minus perhaps the SA. I am a woman and I frequently get asked at job interviews (especially by recruiters) questions that let me know they’re trying to figure out if I have kids and are married without asking me. I didn’t affirmatively answer the questions for my current job but I guess some of my hobbies made it clear I don’t have kids as they involve a lot of free time and late nights.
I’m single with no kids or pets. I made partner as a lateral over a homegrown associate with many more years of experience than I have who has had a few babies at the job in a totally new practice area. She’s been at the firm since she was a law clerk. The founding partner spoke in front of her about how women frequently don’t return after maternity leave. The partners have laughed and made jokes about me not having kids despite never having asked me if I do. I can’t help but feel I made partner over her because I don’t have kids. I’m supervising her and have no clue how to do her job, and they’re having her to teach me how to do her work.
This isn’t unique to this firm either. Many firms have poked around to see my marital status and kids without asking and seemed to be happy when they found out I don’t have any.
This is really disheartening, for everyone.
