I think it's important to always advocate for yourself. Even if you get a great job offer, you should still try to get more. It's not selfish, it's business.
Absolutely! It’s smart to seek what you deserve, even with a good offer.
I negotiated for a better salary at my current job. It wasn't as scary as I thought it was going to be, and I'm glad I found the confidence to do it. That was a few years ago, however, these days it might be more difficult. In a tough job market organizations may not be in a mood to negotiate with people.
It’s true, times can change, and job markets can be tough.
Yes, absolutely and honestly, your colleague's story hits home because I’ve been there too. A few years back I got offered a role that sounded perfect on paper: cool team, interesting problems to solve, and the title bump I’d been chasing. The morning the offer email landed, I felt that exact “sunrise” rush you described like the next chapter was finally starting. But when I looked at the numbers, the base salary was noticeably lower than what I knew the market (and my track record) supported. It stung for a second because part of me just wanted to say yes and start the adventure.
It’s tough when the numbers don’t match your worth. It’s easy to want to jump in, but you did the right thing by questioning it.
