Ignore and don’t work with this goober. Obviously don’t do any tasks for them. If you wanted to help your coworkers you could mention (in private) “hey you know you don’t have to do what he says right”.
Sounds like a genuine t_rd who uses the threat of potential promotion for leverage. Caution: if he is successful getting y’all to act as though you work for him, an ignorant fool of a manager will see him as taking initiative and being a “leader”. Then you WILL end up working for him. You and your colleagues must each break the cycle by going directly to a real leader in person.
Yeah I was thinking if he is trying (and failing) to lead from the group. You can certainly do it correctly and drive the group in the right direction if you’re all working on the same thing, but it doesn’t sound like that’s what’s happening here.
Put him in his place .. before it gets out of control
There are two separate issues here. First, were promotions are concerned, the most qualified individual should be promoted irregardless of seniority. Second, if you have an issue with your coworkers behavior you should bring it up with them privately. Perhaps they don’t know how they are perceived. That said, if the newest employee is stepping up and delegating in you department it could be there is a lack of direction from management and they are stepping into the void.
At least he seems to demonstrate the ability to delegate and if others are taking his orders, he seems to be perceived as a (natural) leader.
