Also, being a senior associate or counsel is often a better gig, depending on where you are in life/your goals. There’s not as much pressure to develop business. You get more employee-type benefits, like health insurance and parental leave.
You want to be partner track, but not under pressure to apply for partner before you’re ready.

If anything I think it’s encouraging; they’re paying you for the experience while simultaneously giving you an extra year of runway to make your case for partnership.

See above. I think it’s more so just that I’ve been practicing for x years, but they only gave me credit for y years. Delayed partner track, too.
