My kiddo is about to turn 4. Up until now, we haven't taken any big family trips together, but we want to start introducing travel as it's something my partner and I love to do. I'm afraid something like Disney might still be too big and overwhelming at that age, but want to do something bigger than a car ride to the beach. Any suggestions on the best kind of trips to start taking young kids on?

We’re going to the Bahamas for our first family vacation. We have a 4 and a half and a three year old. Beach and pool should be good!

Cannot say this enough, national parks! Took my now 4 year old to a bunch of them, we love them. Cool visitor centers and trails of all kinds. Opens up their mind.

Not sure where you live or how active you are but next phase is to get on a plane and go somewhere less than 2hrs away. Is there family to visit, maybe a landscape they have never seen before, mountains, vs beach, vs lakes, vs dry and arrid.

I saved disney until they REALLY APPRECIATED the cost AND would actually REMEMBER.

like

All of these are great ideas but honestly my 4 year old simple thinks it’s awesome to stay in a hotel regardless of where it is.

Livonia, Michigan here we come!

We did a road trip though New England and New York last summer with our 5 yo. It went pretty well. Taking an SUV meant we still got to stop and break up the long stretches, and we could target kid friendly stops in all the cities.

I found that taking my kids to Disney at ~4 and 2 was an awesome experience. So many things to do that I had never done before because usually it's just a mad rush to ride as many big rides as possible. But they really love slowing down to see the shows and character greetings and taking time to eat at theme restaurants, etc. at that age.

But honestly, unless there are certain developmental challenges you're dealing with, most trips should be pretty manageable at that age.

We've done trips to Paris, London, NYC, Chicago, LA, Hawaii, both Disneyland and world, numerous national parks, and who knows how many other locations, all with kids younger than 4.

The best bet is to get after it! It will be a slower pace than you're used to traveling at, but kids are resilient and do well. And I think you'll all appreciate setting the pattern of taking memory-making trips!

like

I took my kids (twin 4 YOEs and a 2 YOE) to Disney this year. Couldn’t agree more.

Wonderful experience =)

like

As someone pointed out, kids are quite resilient typically. Pick any new place that excites you and your partner in a 2-hour flying radius and off you go - the kid will pick up on the excitement and will enjoy the newness of the place. Just carry stock food and meds as best as you can.

Ours is 15 months old and we live in Singapore. We have traveled to a few countries around southeast Asia so far and it has been good.

You will have to be comfortable with the fact that their sleep and eating patterns may be disrupted but they will adjust and be fine. What you do on the trips may also be a bit restricted, e.g. taking regular breaks, having a relaxed agenda etc. but will be fun nevertheless

Enjoy!!

We started by getting a museum membership with a lot of reciprocal museums. Most of our trips centered around a visit to a children’s museum in that city. The kids got used to the fact that each city is different- it’s worked out well across multiple age groups.

Take them to Bahamas … way better than Disney which is full of weirdos. Atlantis is great and relaxing for both adults and kids

like

Great wolf lodge in Georgia

like

This isn’t a bad either. Took mine recently to the one here in Middleburg, VA. It was a overpriced redneck haven, but the kids loved it.

like

I did a couple of cruises with my kids when they were young and they loved it.

We do a lot of camping with kids. If not might want to consider a trip to a national park. They have several options depending on what works. Or a trip to a city (basically pick one)- there will always be a lot of things to do as a family.

like

Interesting. Kids handle the camping well at say 2ish? Might want to try that this summer with my daughter.

My kid is 3 yrs 4 mths. From NY, we have been to Switzerland (she loved the Matterhorn and playgrounds on top of the clouds), London (she liked the museums), Singapore (loves noodles and the cloud forest dome, mostly well-behaved on the 18hr nonstop), Japan (jetlag was hell on me though and she hated the crowds) and driving to DC (more dinosaurs, and planes too). Everything is fair game!

like

Hawaii if you can afford it. Still have fond memories of that from when I was that age

like

2nd this. Took my son when he was nearly 4 and everyone loved it.

You can travel almost anywhere with them, they love everything new. If they feel safe they just enjoy everything… my kid is 3 1/2 and we’ve traveled on 2 continents, and he remembers everything and sometimes ask for specific places, foods or people! It’s great for the and awesome for the family. Just keep in mind that not every place is “kid ready “ so food or utensils might need some planning. The rest is up to you and your life preferences, someone mentioned museum membership and that’s awesome they really like the experience, and most museums have activities for little kids.

like

Honestly, I think the answer is just to just get out and go anywhere.

The kid isn't going to be overwhelmed, they will just be excited, however, choose a place that you as the parent will not be stressed or overwhelmed as that will make or break the trip.

Also, FWIW, my 2yo loved disney and almost a year later still talks about the trip such that we'll take another trip in a few years to build upon that joy.

like

Yea as someone who grew up going to Disney every other year, I can promise you I only remember going once at like 12. I have 3 kids, and none of them will have me eating that amount of money until the oldest is at least that age.

We go to the beach annually at our house in Cape Cod. They love it, it’s way more cost effective, and I don’t care if those memories stick with them for now because they’re all for me.

like

I did Disney with the 3-year-old and a 5-year-old. 5-year-old loved it and a 3-year-old still had to nap and was terrified of most characters. We had a good time but I probably would have waited another year or two

like

I’d maybe recommend a smaller park like Sesame Place. Nature travel and/or parks are also good at that age.

like

We’ve done a few beach-type of trips and those have gone well. There’s less pressure once you get there because you can always just hang out at hotel/pool/beach if kids aren’t much into other types of outings.

We have avoided Disney, too, but are thinking about taking the 5yo and 3yo this fall. A recent airport line (1+ hr) with my oldest has me reconsidering that

like

We did. Beach vacation (Hawaii) with my daughter, who is 3.5, and she loved it. She loves to swim, and really enjoyed playing in the waves and digging in the sand. I would do another beach trip closer to home too

Hi, I'm going on a family vacation to Dominican Republic in January. Looking for some suggestions on best things to do, see and experience.

A long post: seeking some perspective. My husband of 2 years that I’ve been in a relationship with for more than 8 years just woke up one day and told me that he’s unhappy in our relationship. I’m devastated because he’s never expressed anything like this in the 8 years. He’s been super supportive and loving, even when we were in a long distance relationship. He supported my career and dreams and this just doesn’t make sense. We have gotten a counselor but things aren’t getting better. Comment>

(1/2) I started a new job less than a month ago at a large firm with a significant pay increase. I work remotely- which is a special arrangement. They paid for my travel to their headquarters for in-person training. After interacting with my manager and some of the attorneys, I feel like I made a mistake. Manager is demeaning and rude. A bunch of the attorneys dropped not so subtle hints that people who work from home are causing all kinds of problems. I don’t know what to do.
