my manager said I’d be taking $$ away from the rest of my team by asking for more money in my raise. is that fair for her to say? made me feel AWFUL (I’m a woman, so guilt has been a thing I’ve been dealing w often)

Polish up your resume and start looking for another job. If they’re trying to guilt you into taking less pay than what you and your position are worth, what’s stopping them from not budgeting correctly next time and guilting you again into not asking for more money? Be at a job that compensates their employees properly.

likehelpful

I second this. You’re too fucking awesome to be putting up with this trifling bullshit.

A once in a decade labor shortage is here. Exploit it (and them) for once.

That is incredibly inappropriate and manipulative. It’s not your responsibility to reduce your expectations so that others can get more. Continue to advocate for yourself and get what you can for you.

like

She’s wrong and she’s right. She’s wrong in that she or her boss did not effectively lobby for a budget commensurate with you and your team’s value. (Presumably)

If the raise you are asking for is standard for your position/agency comps based on the scopes, agency fees, etc. and they don’t have the money to pay you if you’ve earned the raise, it’s usually an indicator of a larger problem at the top and you should look for another job.

like

She's not wrong but positioning it like that is amateur, and not having enough budget to prevent this is amateur.

Giant red flag that.

like

I meant she's not wrong in that yes that bucket of money is allocated across her department/team and that more going one place leaves less going other places.

Absolutely wrong for positioning that as taking money from coworkers.

And generally wrong for making excuses at all.

Person either deserves a raise or not. Coworkers either deserve raises or not. She's either done her job to secure raises for who she wants raises for or not. Complaining how she can't do her job to her team is weak.

likesmart

No, it’s not fair or appropriate. A good manager can advocate for you, and should be working behind the scenes in your advancement and comp increases before you ask. And IF you ask, a good manager should be able to finesse the conversation without writing checks they can’t cash, and without manipulating you into backing down.

You might not get the target you’re aiming for. You might ask at a time that is out of sync with comp adjustments. There are limits to what can be done — but the situation you describe is not ok

like

That’s awful to say as a manager. I would start looking elsewhere or find a new manager. A manger should be objective and treat people based on their capabilities not on the “team”. As a manager you support and advocate for each team member, not make them feel

So what I’m hearing is they agree that your worth the full raise amount, but if they pay you it they can’t afford to pay others what their worth? I guarantee you somebody else would hear this and say “And that’s my problem how??” You shouldn’t have to lower your standards because your company won’t cough up the dough, and you should encourage the rest of your team the same!

like

Once, my CCO had promise a raise of 20k. When the envelope came, it was only 10k there. He realized the mistake, and he literally went to the spreadsheet taking 500 dollars from 20 employees he hadn’t shared the envelopes with yet.

Awful situation - felt bad, but what could I do?

It is true that some times they have a certain amount to distribute and have to work it out. But, hey, it’s not your responsibility to take care of others’ salaries…

like

It wasn't your mistake. Sorry to hear you felt bad about his mistake.

A lot of people in manager positions haven’t been properly trained to be a manager. So don’t automatically assume they are correct in their thinking. Trust your gut and know your worth!

like

That’s very manipulative and a sign of someone in a managerial role that has had no coaching or training on how to manage people. The fact that this behaviour exists is a big flag. I’d be inclined to leave a.s.a.p.

like

I’ve had this happen to me before and I know how you feel. I’ve stayed at my company, recognized those words for what they were - an attempt at manipulation and got my raise. That said, I still have a bad taste in my mouth about it.

I’ve worked really hard to save about $30k so that if anyone ever said such a dastardly thing to me, I could quit on the spot.

She's wrong. You literally cannot take money from them, unless you steal it. She needs to explain what she means and then help her figure how to get you the money you want.

So I recently got an offer from Deloitte for an Audit associate for $69K with no sign on bonus. Is this the standard rate? I feel like this is irregular since tax consultants get paid $72k starting. Regardless of that I have 2 internships worth of audit experience previously and will get my CPA on time . I know that big4 doesn't negotiate but should I ask for more? And if so, how?
