I have a couple of questions for ZS fishes-
1. Is it possible to turn down a promotion at ZS? I'm currently happy with my responsibilities as a Decision Analytics Consultant and don't want any added responsibilities in the near future (next 5 years)
2. Is it possible to shape up a career path in the BC stream which doesn't involve business development? I don't want to get into working on SOWs and RFPs.

Don’t get me started. My mom won awards from the government (Federal – this was in Canada) for innovation in teaching. She’s phenomenal and she chose to stay a teacher even though they begged her to be a principal. Canada pays teachers way better but I still topped her salary by the time I was 28.
It sounds like your mom loved what she was doing. You can't put a price on that.
The fuck is wrong with this world
It took me two years to make more than my mom. She's in a gov position. Made me so uncomfortable and sad
To be fair you did say she has had the same class for 20 years...
DS1, you just had to be that person, didn’t you? The devil is a lie and so is the lame “devil’s advocate” comment you made
DS1 my mom gets like $100 for additional work give me a break. And there’s no way my fucking Facebook brief to sell cheese for one week in Michigan is worth twice as much as teaching a 6 year old how to read. SDS1 yeah they do but I also want my mom to get the respect she deserves and has well over earned.
Teachers are so important, yet so undervalued 😔💔
I was making more at 27 than when my dad retired at 71 last year.
And it’s making me miss my mom!
Totally agree that teachers should make more. But to play devil's advocate, they do get a lot of things that we don't get: summers (and breaks) off, pensions in some places, job security, a set schedule, additional money for doing additional work (like coaching a sport or directing a musical), not to mention a rewarding job where they are directly impacting the lives of people in a positive way. If they wanted to make great money, they wouldn't go into teaching. They know they want to work with kids and have a schedule that accommodates their life, and that's what they get.
Hows your Mom's pension situation? She getting one?
That’s partially because you can’t retire from this industry. You have to make as much money as possible as fast as you can before you are pushed out at 40. Advertising is a sprint. Teaching is a marathon with a pension.
This thread makes me sad.
I'm probably making around what my parents were making combined when I was growing up
Isn’t that the kind of life your parents want for you? To be successful and well paid? Parents want their kids to be better versions of themselves
My mom is also in government - started as a secretary way back when and now is the most senior person at her branch. The only person in the state to start from the bottom and end up at the top in her department. I also make more than double her salary and her job is way more demanding and important than mine.
I agree teachers are underpaid, but I also know a few people who are teachers and there’s a reason salaries are lower. It’s just not as specialized a skill. It just takes an angel of a person to deal with kids.
@DS1 Teachers may get summers “off” but they’re not paid for that time either. Plus they usually stay two weeks late/arrive two weeks early close up or prepare for the next year so they don’t even get the full summer.
Yeah but she will get paid her salary for the rest of her life i.e. pension, you will get 0 in retirement. So subtract that from your salary over time, also take out 4 mo. A year for days you work per year, spring, summer and winter breaks.
