Need help evaluating an offer. Currently at BCG a few months away from promotion to Consultant (post-MBA role, but I don’t have an MBA). Comp at BCG would be $200-$225k ish. Have a tech offer that’s remote in strategy. Really love the company and the team, but all in comp including equity is $170k, so would be a pretty big hit. Would love everyone’s thoughts on this kind of offer in general for someone in my position and how to think through remote as a benefit.

Get the promo, it'd be a shame to leave that on the table. Don't ever take a pay cut.

I’m assuming you’re pretty young. It will be hard to find an industry job that matches within strategy.

Personally, I excited consulting for 160-170 TC with 4 YOE. I’ve found most corporate strategy roles to pay around this, or lower, even for big brand name tech.

200k+ will be hard without an MBA at your age.

like

Stick at bcg. That’s a pretty big hit and at the consultant and higher levels your exits are likely to look much better.

like

FWIW, I’ve found it very tough to match post MBA comp without a MBA. I’m currently at $250K TC (T2) so similar position with not quite as good a brand name on my resume. Started directly out of ugrad.

You can probably beat $170 but if you’re holding out for $200, do you value remote + lower COL at say $15K ea? That’s not crazy to me.

like

My anecdotal sense is a lot of MBA C’s are taking cuts to leave too. I’m not sure if they are the same magnitude though.
To be clear the offers are definitely better than not having the MBA role on your resume. It doesn’t hurt you. But 0-3 YOE you can match comp much easier. After that it gets tough.

like

Without knowing the tech company, stay at least until the promo and look after. With that said, the golden handcuffs is very real and will only get harder as you move up. So if the tech role is something youve wanted to do, do it now. 50k isn’t that much - decision is much harder when you’re talking about 50%+ paycuts

Say at BCG get the promotion. You will find another role that will value you appropriately.

Thanks for the responses from everyone so far. One question I have is how to think about remote as a form of comp. obviously if this was in SF, $170k is very different than where I plan to live, which is more a tier 2 city. If anyone has any info on if this is a particularly good remote offer that would be very helpful.

Don’t underestimate the $ value of time and the cost of living differences. $170K in Boise is the same standard of living as $340K in SF. And every extra 20 minutes you save on your commute is worth $20K to $50K in happiness.

like

It really depends what you’d like to do long term…the comp hit is always going to be real, regardless of what people say.

If you are planning to go to MBA, the BCG sponsorship can be worth it - but know that your exits straight out of BCG after 2-3 years are often better than those you’ll get immediately out of your MBA, unless in certain industries. The MBA kind of resets your career, I’ve realized, if you’re coming from a pre-MBA background looking to exit into industry post (I’m in school right now; basically you’re usually limited to Manager titles and comp out of MBA, but you can often get those out of MBB associate years).

If you’re planning to jump to industry and want a BU role one day (vs strategy), it can often be easier to make the move now when you’re junior and then work your way across the org in the upcoming years; the openings often become fewer / demand operating experience that you won’t have as a consultant when you look to exit at a more senior level. And of course, industry won’t be willing to pay the $$$ that BCG does at that level, which can hurt.

Those are the things I’d be thinking about / have thought about when weighing similar moves (albeit non-tech for me).

Makes sense. Your comp would still go up - don’t get me wrong - but not dramatically, from what I’ve heard from peers, because you’ll likely be capped at an M/SM role. For Director or Principal or Lead or whatever the corresponding titles at tech companies can be of an actual BU (not Strategy), they want you to have at least a few years of large team management experience (PL), which it sounds like you don’t want to stay long enough for, and those roles are going to be harder to find and to get at a good company unless you play your cards right.

In other words, from what I’ve seen, you’d need to command seniority and YOE in operating roles to really get the dramatic increases in comp (or matches to consultant pay). That said, it obviously depends on the kind of company you join - plenty of startups awash with VC funding will pay PLs good money for leadership roles, but it’s going to be a match in base at the absolute best (again, all anecdotal based on friends).

The bschool thing shouldn’t be a surprise actually - ask around! I’d heard the same before I left for school. Everyone at school interested in tech is trying to be a PM so OCR really only brings those level roles (which you could lateral into from BCG right now if you wanted to, if you work at it). Outside of OCR, you could maybe find some cool opportunities but it’ll be rare that you’ll find something that makes up for the MBA sponsorship you didn’t take and that you wouldn’t have been able to get out of Associate/Consultant years at BCG.

Long story short…based on what you’ve said, unless you’re sold on this role and/or hate your job now, I would wait to get the Consultant promo then search, then leave sooner vs hanging around for PL and/or MBA.
