Not every LAYOFF is bad!

I’ve been working in my field for more than 20 years. Same line of work but different companies. During the 20 plus years, I only had to leave twice on my own due to better opportunities. All the other times were layoffs. I was devastated when I got the last layoff cause I wanted to retire with this company. It turned out to be a blessing cause not only I was able to negotiate better salaries but people showed more interest with my experience. Always stay positive…

That's a commendable attitude, and you do make a really good point. I had one layoff early on that really set me back. But another one, years later, was a blessing in disguise. It hurt at the time, but it was better for me. Sometimes we need a kick to get us into motion.

My situation isn't a layoff, it's a flat out firing. I struggled with leaving my way because I didn't want to abandon the relationships I built. I loved what I did, I just wasn't a fan of the people around me. However, what they did to me was actually FOR me. I'm less stressed (even though I worry about paying bills), and I have a chance to find something better.

Happy for you! That's great 😊

Yes indeed! This is a culture that we would never be comfortable with, “Lay-offs”. I had a few in my career but it looks like the more they kept coming, the higher and better my career is flying. For instance, I spent 10 years working for one company, the amount of raises I got was equivalent to $3.50. After my last layoff, through griefs and pains, I found myself negotiating ~$10.00 more per hour. Remember it took me 10 years to get $3.50 raises total. My goodness! the psychological impact that comes with layoffs is huge and no one wants to go through it. If you got laid off, it’s not the end, better opportunities are awaiting for you. I would love to hear some testimonies.

Is there a definitive guide to cost of living? The obvious cost of living centers (SF, NYC, LA etc.) get covered a lot, but I’m wondering where my city falls. It’s a modest Midwest city with ~100k residents but is a relatively touristy spot. It often feels like a MCOL area but I’m not sure how to adequately judge that, and it would be helpful to know when comparing salaries and the like.

Company T is paying me way more (twice) than Company B. And I like company T more. However, they want me to start working in February if I get this position. If I end up getting the offer, I will have to quit my internship at Company B, almost immediately after I begin the internship.

Is this okay?

To clarify, I don’t have an offer yet, I’m just looking to make a move.

Thank you!

UK market is open only for niche skillsets ( Data engineer + analytics). Firms aren't interested in sponsoring rest all skill sets, as they can be filled internally. They have limited quota every year, and are very choosy when it comes to allocation. Preference is first given to EU nationals and then Asians during shortlist stage.

Referral works, but the person who is referring you should have enough clout in the organization to present your profile!

So I had been working as medical interpreter up to the early part of this year. Today, during an interview, the Director with whom I was interviewing genuinely urged me to consider pursuing a career as a PA or even attempt to go to medical school. I had considered it in passing before but today was about the third or fourth time that someone had earnestly nudged me in that direction. Has anyone here made such a career pivot before? I love working in healthcare, there’s nothing like it.
