What makes you think they expect SM level work?
They are optimizing the cost. They are offloading their workload to you.
I worked harder when I made $100k a year than I do at $1m a year. And no, I’m not coasting before anyone draws conclusions.
You could have invested better when you earned 100k and left at a much more optimal position. Do you think it’s a wise idea MD? And how to find people who are going places? And stick to the them? Interesting work over boring work? In the age of AI is it worth it? Coach me Mr Managing Director. Please.

Let's bottom line this. Do you have a paying job? Since the answer is yes, then maybe you just need to suck it up and do what is asked. If you don't like it, you can join the thousands of other unemployed tech workers. To that end, I am sure one of us unemployed tech professionals will gladly take your place. This is not meant to sound rude, it is just a shot of reality.

SMs aren’t always full time on projects and they have multiple projects they are managing. You aren’t and SM and need to deliver on one project. There’s a difference.
