Collecting unemployment benefits
Neither of these terms mean much in terms of benefits. Traditionally “laid off” means a mass reduction in staff rather than anything related to your performance specifically, but now many people use it to mean that you were terminated for performance reasons but not “for cause.” And while “fired” used to mean performance related terminations, now people often think of it as only a termination “for cause."
no collect that paycheck
I mean, at Senior level, my firm doesnt have severance package.
Not all firms are that generous -
Especially inAt Will States
Laid off makes you eligible for Unemployment
Further when you fill in job applications they ask you if you have ever been fired - easier to explain a capacity based lay-off
rumor is Deloitte does something if you're let go vs quit. includes an NDA too so of course ....
You can collect unemployment (if you don’t sign anything that says you won’t)
any reason why firms make you sign something saying you won’t? Genuinely curious as I don’t know how the unemployment process works/what incentive they have for you not to sign.
If it’s a reduction in force type “lay off” you generally get a decent severance. Also get paid out pto. If fired for cause... not so great
