One of my goals next year is to be a better active listener and try to summarize conversations to myself afterwards.

That is a good goal to have. Done well, active listening is the cornerstone of having good communication skills.

I completely agree!

That's a great practice to get into. One of the things I'll do sometimes is write what's essentially a memo to myself summarizing a conversation I've had if I consider it particularly important. Just having a Google Doc where you can memorialize conversations (or meetings for that matter) is sufficient, it doesn't have to be anything fancy or carefully edited, as it's really just notes for yourself. You'll find, of course, that you become a better listener if you think you'll be writing a summary for yourself.

Thanks for sharing your practice! I may give it a try.

Great goal

The more you actively listen to all the people you work with, the better your relationships will be, and it will be so beneficial in other aspects of your life as well.

I could definitely get better at that too

I think that is a really great skill to develop and one that is easily attainable. Good for you OP!

This is a very difficult time in the market so try to figure out what’s not working and fix it. Stick with your process while trying to improve it. That should you you in the best place to manage risk now and be positioned to capture new opportunities in the coming weeks and months. Discipline, execution, and patience are key sources of alpha. Best of luck.

Does anyone have any advise on how to become a staff video editor at a creative production company? They usually don't have any "job openings" listed on their site.

I have 5+ years of experience working at a creative ad agency, but much of the work was pitch/sizzle videos (yuck).

I'm freelancing now which has been a great step in the right direction but I'd eventually love to be on staff at a post house like The Den, Cut+Run, Company 3 etc. pumping out cool work. Just seems hard to break in.
