Do it, but be prepared if you’re going during a busy time of year for “traffic”. Basically a good amount of other tourist driving it as well, and there’s some narrow, almost one way turns. That being said, that’s one of the most beautiful parts of Maui and I couldn’t imagine not doing it if I was there again.
We did it on our own and we did both the back route and regular route. It was an amazing experience. Would definitely recommend doing it on your own as it’s pretty much straightforward with some areas which require caution.
Road to Hana is gorgeous and fun. Highly recommend a tour guide (we did Maui private guides). The road is narrow and twisty and the driver likely wouldn’t be able to enjoy the views. Plus they know the areas along the route that aren’t as covered in tourists (though with covid I imagine it to be quieter). We rode along in a private tour and actually went in the opposite direction going south toward Kihei rather than north past Paia to start. Loved it. I will say we did not do it on our first trip to Maui but rather on another trip. It takes essentially an entire day.
We did a private tour and would recommend so everyone can look out. Provides a lot of very interesting hawaiian history I loved it
We used an app / map that had specific locations for us to start on. We did the Haeleakala Sunrise that morning by car, and then drove down and actually kinda went the opposite way around the island (ie traveling East around the island), which was much less traveled until we got like to the northern parts. It was a crazy long day but it was so awesome. Had the jeep with the top down just out there, stopped at some waterfalls with some cliff jumping spots, got some tacos, overalls awesome way to see Maui

Reminder that the Haeleakala sunrise now requires a timed entry permit that sells out so remember to buy before taking off early morning only to find out you can’t get in.

I’ve done it about 5 times now. Honestly the roads aren’t that bad. I use the “Shaka” guide app and the narrator is a blast and does good pointing out stuff, marking turns and giving the history and facts about the area. Don’t recommend tours as they skip a lot of cool stops due to time or parking constraints etc but a private tour would be fine if you can afford it.
I have done it once and am doing it again this summer. I am using the Shaka app. I didn’t want to use a tour because I ant things at my pace. Not a schedule they have to stick to.
Road to Hana sucked
We got engaged in Maui, and on our engagement day, we went from Haleakala to Hana, it took forever. It was dangerous, you couldn’t go over 20 mph because of the curves, people were wreckless drivers and passing on dangerous curves. Then after a few hours, we got to Hana, we were hungry, there were no open restaurants or restrooms. So we drove by the beach, it was no big deal, we turned back around and went back to Wailea where we were staying. I love Maui though, just not the road to Hana.

You missed the point of the road to Hana. You’re supposed to drive slow and enjoy the scenery/waterfalls, maybe do some hikes along the way etc... not rush through as fast as you can to get to Hana as it’s a small town with not much there. Many people buy lunches in Paia before heading out but there are some places to eat along the way.
We did the Road to Hana on our honeymoon and absolutely loved it. Similar to people above, we used the Shaka app and would recommend that too.
We drove to the end late afternoon/night and stayed in an airbnb tiny home/cabin, then drove back during the following day, stopping where we we wanted/read about along the way. We enjoyed ourselves and had a couple nice swims, but I get easily motion sick so did not enjoy much of it since a lot was spent in the car going round constant narrow veering turns
