Partners/MDs, did you stay in consulting because you really like what you do, or did not manage to leave (eg, tried to leave but did not find compelling enough opportunities?)

I’m one step away from making partner (likely 2 more years). Tried to leave 3 times - every time after a few interviews I came back and continued to suck up, because nothing was compelling enough (eg slower trajectory, more risks, or “lifestyle upgrade” is not much - everyone seems to work hard). Wonder how others think

I am OK with what I do, although after 15+ years it certainly lost much of excitement. I enjoy significant control in the types of roles I can take and businesses I can build, so cannot complain too much either. I am fairly tired of the lifestyle, unfortunately no one will pay me my $2M for any slower jobs. So will keep up for 5 more years and then retire altogether, with a generous pension.

You’re making $2m after 15 years at B4. You rock!

I’m in the same situation as you, although for me MD is more like 5-6 years away. I’ve also tried to leave, interviewed and then stayed. My thinking is if I really hated consulting as much as other people hate it, these offers in industry would look more attractive.

like

Great perspective above from some other partners. I stayed because I genuinely love what I do. I work with CEOs on their most pressing issues, and I get to coach and apprentice and work with some of the smartest most talented people I’ve ever met. I also get to research things that interest me, and I’m active in various nonprofit organizations that I care about. It would be almost impossible to replicate this in an industry job, let alone make the same amount of money.

helpful

Ditto!

It depends on what you want. Was tempted to leave multiple times...but never left because (and that’s personal to me):
- change was too slow at traditional industry players & your influence is likely lower (today I interact with F500 CEOs, in industry you likely start C-1, only very rarely C-level
- start-ups/scale-ups are nice but not same means (most of the time) as the large consulting companies, also often lower salary and higher risk-reward mechanisms, great if you are single but for me with two kids not an option
- other consultancies...first it is difficult to find one that is at least same level + switching to do same job with ZERO network needs a serious financial step-up (Minimum 30-50%) is needed

helpful

The best time to leave is at Senior Consultant or Manager level I've heard.

smart

Liked it. Less politics, more diversity of work, get to meet C-levels all over the world

helpful

Depends on what is keeping you there. Personally I left consulting too early. Pretty sure I would have been more fulfilled staying in consulting and going to another firm with better brand recognition (I was somewhere where the work did not really sell itself very well at the time so moving up meant less consulting and more selling). The opportunities for the more fulfilling roles in industry are better once you’ve been a partner for a while and move over to executive level roles rather than getting stuck somewhere in a role where your impact might not be as great.

MD and partner are two different destinations.
I would leave now if you don’t want partnership as that is a big commitment

MD is fine. You can leave as MD to any other firm

It HAS to be about your own goals and interests.

I don’t know what is expectation in terms of lifestyle upgrades or trajectory in your current track , given you tried to leave 3 times. I mean that tells me, those metrics suck right now. Is it going to get better at partnership?

In any case , Almost every one I know on partner track are laser focused on that goal and nothing else. So that’s another red flag if you will

OP - I feel like we are the same person.

I have been doing at least 2-3 interviews each year in consulting because I came in saying this would be a couple of years thing. But I have yet to find the perfect combination of level, comp, trajectory and brand. The closest I came to calling it quits was actually for a CSO role at a $1B company. But the company's vision wasn't inspiring enough.

I am now thinking that if I push again and make partner then I never will leave consulting. Not sure if that makes me happy or sad

I’d say C-1 level for a $1B company is pretty good before making partner! Of course vision is important..

Like what I do but have stayed moreso because I have great flexibility with work and will be able to retire by 50

Hi!! I’m an HR Coordinator currently (about two years of experience) but my job has so many responsibilities and tasks I’m beyond burnt out. It’s truly impossible to focus on one task because things are constantly being thrown my way. I’ve heard whisperings of a promotion or raise, but my workload is already too much, I don’t know if I’d want to accept more responsibility. Is it normal to feel like you have just as many responsibilities as your superiors who make 30k+ more than you?

Started a new job 7 months ago. There’s been a hiring freeze and it seems they canned the recruitment team. Things seems to be slowing down drastically in the span of a week. Getting the resume all spiffed up and getting interviews together. When do you make the exit? “When you find a job” I know, but…

Also, would me making my exit to another role that I might leave in a 8 months bite me in the ass down the line? Do I just grab anything in the interim?
