I've worked with the partners I report to, but not so much outside of my practice group. Is it normal for an associate to request a partner to do something or request information?

Let’s talk about wrongful termination. The other day I was fired in the middle of the day without any warning. How do you deal with unresponsive summers? I’m a junior and overseeing my first project with summers (5 in total). Two are unresponsive and do not acknowledge my emails. Do I need to make it clear that I expect acknowledgement when I assign work? The other three don’t have a problem with this, so I’m not sure what it is.
