I worked in advertising for 15 years, did well and enjoyed my time even though I encountered sexism, racism, backstabbing and extremely large egos. I found the shaming and fear-mongering about how superior ad agencies are over the new comers silly and a way to hold you back along with all the other items I mentioned. It's the attitudes expressed above that holds the industry back. I can attest at Edelman Digital, I've encountered some of the most talented and insightful creatives. The work is more authentic than stuff I produced at large well-known agencies. It connects, its smart and its brave. There's no one holding us back telling us what is right in an industry designed to only let you go so far (and works you to death) before you age out or discover you aren't apart of the mean or boy's club that makes an agency go round. If you are just seeking approval from other current ad agency people then go to another ad agency. And, enjoy the rinse and repeat. Or learn something new.
I left your classic ad agency for edelman (NY) and it’s a blast! We are doing big creative work, and the people are smart and insightful. The benefits are wonderful and they pay really well. Idk what Strat 1 is talking about, but I’m sorry you had such a negative experience at such a great place.
So does being unemployed.
The “agency x sucks” responses are tacky AF. I wouldn’t respect someone who would say, ew you went to x school? Saying that about where someone works is just as tacky, people.
The OP was trying to be nice and help people out and you guys are just being dicks. Hopefully none of you find yourselves in the unemployment line.
Why is everyone so angry and hateful about this? If you define yourself based on how cool or even "good" your agency is, you've got bigger problems. Also, I've freelanced at Edelman and found it pleasantly not like an agency, more female cds than I've ever encountered and some of the nicest people I've worked with. RGA, on the other hand, was filled with stressed out, unfriendly people who prided themselves on staying late to work on Verizon banners.
Ewww, Edelman sucks.
Unemployment is better than Edelman.
Hahah unemployment is where humans go to die.
Lol @edelman1 and the pm comments 😂
Lol PM as in private message, not project manager.
Edelman is where creatives go to die.
What if I hated RGA? Would I love it there?
Have worked in advertising. Have worked at Edelman. Edelman is indeed very type A. You’ll find PR agencies to be aggressively rational and not terribly great at lateral/creative thinking. Not a bad place if you’re senior enough to shape the work. Terrible if you aren’t.
Lol at my own comment. This is an accurate representation on how my day is going. I like it here. No major egos. Great work life balance, people are kind and smart. I've come from big and small shops and plan to be here for a while. It's even better if you drink the EdelLove koolaid. Dont think ill be winning many awards herr, but as a non creative, not really a priority.
There is def not a PM function
👆I don't think so....
Edelman is too type-A, any true R/GA-er would hate it there.
I moved from an ad agency to Edelman and was so surprised by how insanely smart, innovative and driven people are there. Everyone is expected to be creative; unlike in ad agencies where suits become meeting organisers. Park your pre-conceptions!!
Same. I worked at all the agencies, won the awards, worked with top talent, yadda yadda. I can't be happier to be at Edelman Digtal now. And frankly, I'd been so conditioned by previous agencies to be mean, egotistical, and loud, that took me probably 2 months to realize I can just chill and be myself, and still be successful. Sure, Edelman has its faults like everywhere, but all in all I've found an island of super smart creatives, leadership who give a shit and are human, transparency, real teamwork, and work that is more interesting than churning out Verizon banners as mentioned above. We attract some decent creative heavy hitters, most who are sick of the usual rigamarole. Work-life balance is pretty legit, AND we still picked up a couple of Lions in 2015, in NY. And I think LA picked up a few last year. So yeah - doing some of the best work of my career in less time, with less stress. Agencies love to hate on each other... we'll just be over here at Edelman making cool stuff. Blegh. This thread is a good reminder of why I got out of the "real" agency world. We're happy to take on more "agency refugees" -- if you're cool, sick of egos, want to work collaboratively, and can do really good work... well, we have plenty of open recs. Check them out.
