No sadly it’s just a numbers game when layoffs come around. I’ve done all the “extracurricular” culture stuff on top of excelling at my job and still been laid off. Companies are just paying lip service to these culture initiatives to give the impression that they care.
Yep, and getting an MBA also helps!

At this point their is no way to "make" yourself layoff proof. Nepotism is the only way and you have to be born into that.
I'm good now D1 that was my last gig. But it was a head scratcher for me. Some people who made more than me and was having serious relationship problems with clients and the rest of the team stayed for some reason.

I’ve also seen the “popular” and “well-liked” let go as well.
Ultimately the mystery is an amalgam of human, biased, personal and EMOTIONAL preference.
We are in the business of emotion. Human story telling, emotional drivers in brand loyalty and consumer behavior. It’s ALL beyond logic.
Whether it’s numbers spun for desired effect, bad-mouthing someone who threatens with their talent and insight, or balancing likability with talent and the ability/potential to push the work—it’s a human game. And we’re all vulnerable at one point or another, despite our inherent creative value.
Even the best “game players” among us may be on the losing side of an RIF directive.
The best thing you can do to protect yourself is prove that you’re able to help bring in and/or keep revenue in the building.

I don’t think there’s a self made golden parachute. At this point all you can do is to do your job the best you can, everyday. I’d focus on that.
Being a gung ho part of the team can be valuable to some people. The president of my agency likes people who like the agency. But it only matters if you’re also good at your job.
Building culture in a company is important.
