I don't think it's commonplace among white collar workers. I think it's common for people engaged in FIRE communities. Which is a very small, minuscule portion of the population. I do think it's achievable, but I think it's harder than ever.
This bowl is not representative of society - it’s a group of frugal, highly paid people with a goal of maximising NW.
This does not reflect the broader population.

The people who stay on the bowl also are (with few exceptions) not retired. Those with lower FIRE numbers are usually not here

33 and spouse is 34. $2.5M household net worth with $2M in liquid assets. We didn’t start making high income until the past 4 years, but we have been pretty mindful of our spending habits and invest heavily on a regular basis.

Incidentally, Money Guy did a survey with 25k respondents and couple months back. This will still skew high - FIRE people - but more variety and not necessarily white collar workers.

If you assume working a decent paying job by age 24 you would need to save 108k per year for 11 years at 10 % annual return to hit 2M by age 35. Less than 1 percent of U.S population can do this. I don't count your primary home as that is not liquid.
Married with 3 kids so the first million took until age 42 but now early/mid 50s at 7M NW and no debt. For me it was a hockey stick and 100% return over the past 5 years did help! Understanding the hockey stick helps when you’re slogging along.
