Wanted to highlight Prudential Financial’s hiring practices. They rescinded my offer once I attempted to negotiate the salary. The official reason given was that I didn’t “sound excited enough”.
They then admittedly gave the offer to someone who was less qualified. There were other red flags throughout the job offer process that the HR team should overall be ashamed of.

"Great opportunity but the timing isn't right..."
It seems like a nice place, but not quite the type of work I’m looking for right now. Seems like the role might fit a different kind of art director better.
I use “not the right fit” - but be specific and mean it. you don’t want to be perceived as difficult or not placeable. give the recruiter something concrete.
for example - the position had too much travel - find me a position with less travel.
the position was B2B - find me B2C.
the position had too many direct reports - find a position with a smaller staff to supervise.
all reasonable, tangible criteria.
